So, I called Triple A this morning at 8:35. Due to various and sundry issues, the tow truck did not get there until TWELVE THIRTY-FIVE. Wrath and ranting. Eventually I got to Advanced, where I described the problem and they told me they'd look at it, but that if it was the transmission, I'd honestly be better off buying a new car. I can't afford a brand-new car; there is no way my budget will bend that way, especially not with the change to paychecks that functionally cuts my monthly pay by $200, even if technically I am not making any less. So it'll be certified pre-owned for me; I'm being told either Toyota, Honda, or Nissan (in that order) are my best bets.

I've had to chunk down at least $2000 in the past year alone for a car that was barely worth even that much, so I can honestly feel your pain. Everything you've mentioned above (except for the gasket, because on my car that would have cost 1400 dollars, and also the water pump, two sensors, and god who knows what else...) Recently the bank came around and offered me a 5000 personal loan. Oye, decisions, decisions...

used Hyundais seem to be cheap and reliable enough, judging by the 2005 Elentra I got for $11,000. Of course I've only had it about half a year, but no problems yet

My mechanic was telling me that he knows people whose Camrys have 260,000 miles on them and are still running, so I'm thinking I might look in that direction.
