Julien looks at the jeans in his hands. Streaks of green run crisscross over the pale blue denim. It’s just an expensive paint, of course, but all the same it leads his mind back to the time when those streaks would’ve been stains, but he doesn’t want to think about his career.
Then he’d have to think of its end, too.
He tries to conjure up another memory. Zdeněk and he having an impromptu night time picnic in the park. No. He had been too drunk to stay upright that night.
There was another night he and Zdeněk spent outside. They’d played some one-on-one football on the freshly mown grass and Julien’s new white trousers were more green than they were white at the end of the day. Because of the twilight, Julien missed the ball once and tripped and fell against Zdeněk, who lost his balance and landed on his back with a thump and an ‘Oof!’ as Julien came down.
‘God, you’re heavy,’ he’d said, teasingly, muttering other, equally unflattering things. ‘Shh,’ Julien said, giggling from the scare and surprise. ‘Stop laughing, I mean it!’
« Taîs-toi ! he commanded, falling back on his native language to say it with more authority, and then, et laîsse-moi te baiser... »
Zdeněk just looked at him strangely, which Julien interpreted as an invitation to, indeed, let him kiss him. They’d made love under falling stars that night, in the almost-light of a modern-day city, quietly and comfortable.
The next day, he’d enjoyed plucking blades of grass out of Zdeněk’s hair, and -
Someone taps him on the shoulder. ‘Sir, are you going to buy that?’ Shaken from his reverie, Julien puts the blue-green jeans away and grabs the nearest, then turns and wheels to the counter.
