They dumped him on a concrete floor he found as he came to. On a concrete floor in a cell.
"Hey! Hey!" The man cast a glare back at him just to ensure the Spaniard knew he could hear him. Then walked through the door. With the keys. "Hey! Señor? Señor, can you tell me why I'm in here? No? Bastardo..."
Alejo sat back on the low wooden table that was presumably meant to be a bed with a thin, worn blanket. What had he done? He stared at his beautiful sword on the other side of the bars as he considered the previous night. A victory on the battlefield, normal. Celebrations, normal. Señoras, very normal. What was different this time ( ... )

Still, silence. He looked down at his handiwork and spun it around to face him. An effort to distract himself from the frustrated woman.
That woman was completely unimpressed. She crooked an eyebrow and folded her arms. "Hey, nice armour."
"I know," he said fondly as he beamed at it. Then he blanched as he realised what he'd done and glanced over at a man sitting nearby playing with half a chess set.
He didn't even look up. Simply held out his palm. "Pay up."

It wasn't gloating. Not by a longshot. Her tone had been cool, and her message implied. Addressing up an argument set on hold for weeks about a particular class.
Thirteen. Thirteen students. Well, they had graduated. Thirteen heroes, he could say, but they would always be students as far as he was concerned. In this month alone they'd lost thirteen heroes. Thirteen students he had taught. Thirteen students who had attended a particular class. Been taught that they were trained to be able to do the impossible. Been taught by him. Had extra lessons with him. Those particular thirteen students. All within a month. A month of leaving the castle.
She'd walked in. Told him and turned around to leave. Left with a parting glare full of blame. Left him frozen while he analysed the information. While he considered his mistake made over several days one month ago. Considered the cost of a few words.

When finally confronted with the chilly night he even used magic to 'heat things up'. until the scenic clearing in the forest took on an exotic and distinctly steamy atmosphere. Even the freeing water had only proved to be a minor issue.
It was when Alistair pulled Julia close to claim a kiss worthy of a scene in Hollywood's most romantic movie that they slipped and hit a problem. Literally hit it. And it was very cold and very wet.
After they pulled themselves out of the pool there was a series of profuse apologies from both. That is, until Julie interrupted the healer to continue what their accident had stopped. The atmosphere wasn't quite the same, but the kiss was better than he could have imagined.

"It looks like you finished a long time ago." Lichtenstein stood with his arms folded. Surveying the healer. "You should get some sleep."
Alistair sighed and nodded in resignation. Pushing away the tablet and setting his chair back. "I will. I will. I'll just check on Sebastien first."
"If I remember correctly, you've already been to the Nexus to visit Julia. You've taught several weekend classes. You've entertained the children, corrected tests and now you want to stay up all night gossiping?" Alistair pulled a guilty face. "If you keep this up your body is going to collapse in exhaustion! Bed. Now."
"But-!"
"Now, Alistair! Before I have to stop you from going to the Nexus!"
The healer sighed and stood. Dragged himself over to the door. Really. There were much more important things to do than sleep.

Alistair left him fussing happily over the carriage as he returned to his partner.
"How did we do?" She asked eagerly. Glancing from his eyes to his hands.
"We did well."
She looked suspicious then. "How well?"
He pulled a small bag and opened it to show the different glistening gold and silver metal coins as they started walking. "Very well."
She grinned at the road ahead then. "I'm sure he won't notice it's missing."
