I agree with your review...no "All the President's Men," but a very solid movie nonetheless, and we have to cherish these types of movies because they are a dying breed.
When I first heard Affleck was replacing Edwart Norton I was pissed and lost all interest. Then I started seeing the TV trailer alot (http://displacedbrett.wordpress.com/2009/04/21/state-of-play) and it showed Crowe looking commanding as always, and I my interested was renewed. Also, it features a great song, "Unstoppable" by Minutes Til Midnight that does a great job of setting the mood, maybe that helped.
Anyway, it was worth paying the $10 to see in theatres, and I'll probably see it again some day. Honestly, I think Jason Batemen stole the show, he was great.
I had no problem with Affleck in the movie. I like Edward Norton a lot, but I thought that Affleck was great. And two, I think that he has been underappreciated as an actor for too long. I'm still pissed that he wasn't nominated for his performance in "HOLLYWOODLAND".
