So, I decided I was alternating crazily between smilie-styles, and have used ^.^, :), and =) all within the past few updates.  This strikes me as somewhat silly.

So I went and got myself some smilies, w00t!

I would be happy if I had any idea how to get them into the entries.  They are currently in my image gallery.  Does anyone have any idea?

So there's no way to get it from my image-gallery without having to do the whole < img > business?

I haven't found one, unfortunately. The HTML method gets easier as you keep doing it, although it's hard at first, and it looks weird when you're composing a message. I think in Update Journal there is now a link on the upper left called "Insert Image" that will help you with inserting one. I'm not sure if this will make it any easier for you, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I'm friending you. :)
