*something that looks/thinks specifically at the mother/daughter relationships in the Petrova line and what being a doppleganger-mother OR mother-of-a-doppleganger means to the narrative/characters
** and whether this is different at all to the mothers of other supernatural teens
The very first thing that comes to my mind is the theme of Raised by Another. Amara supposedly had a child, but she got turned into the anchor young, so she couldn't have raised her child. According to the Original Family, Tatia died equally young. Katherine lost Nadia right after she gave birth to her. Isobel left Elena with the Gilberts. At the same times, the Petrovas about whose childhood we know grew up in traditional families (Katherine, Isobel, Elena), and two of them (Katherine, Elena) were close with their (adoptive) mothers. So it seems that Petrova motherhood is arrested development; it's being stuck in adolescence. There's emphasis on being a young mother (Isobel was 15), and on inappropriate circumstances (Tatia being, allegedly, a single mother, Katherine having a baby out of wedlock). There are a few things that Petrova mothers seem to have in common
