Book: The Blue Castle by LM Montgomery

I kind of accidentally hijacked a conversation at dangermousie's LJ and seem to have killed the conversation (eep!) so I thought I'd better take my love of this book back to my own journal.

Wikipedia's description of the book is really bad:

The Blue Castle is a novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, who is best known for her novel Anne of Green ( Read more... )

That lbooks looks really interesting, It is the type of book I read when I get into a rut with SciFi or when I am staring at a tremendiou amount of plane time (Newark to Bejing or the like)

Koala, you have such a beautiful way of expressing yourself. It's obvious from this and some of your earlier posts that you are a book lover.

I think I would read this just because you've made it sound so rich. I admit, I am one of the many who love LM Montgomery. I think my favorite, besides the Anne novels, was "Story Girl."

Oooh have you read Blue Castle too? As to Anne, I loved her too. Gilbert Blythe has to have been one of my earliest crushes on a fictional character ;)

Oh, I just reread it, and what an understated, touching gem it is...

The fact that Valancy is so excited because Barney merely likes her is...guuuh.

No you didn't dream it up or make it up because you /made/ me read it. And I was glad you did and I have read it a few times since that you haven't made me do.

I loved your retelling as it brought the story back to me. It is more frank and open then her other books

Hi there!

I stumbled on your journal when I was looking for Scorpius/Rose fanfiction...and ended up here!

I grew up reading the Anne books and the Emily books. I think my favourite was Rilla of Ingleside. Just last month, I discovered Project Gutenberg and went crazy downloading any and all L.M. Montgomery and found myself reading The Blue Castle and I absolutely fell in love with it! I'm so glad I didn't find it when I was growing up, I don't think I would have been able to 'feel' it in the same way as I did now that I'm older. It was so very poignant. I was especially touched by Valency's feelings of pain and inadequacy when compared to Olive's 'perfection'. And the mud pile! I think that part just broke my heart for her!

And yes, I wanted to move to Muskoka after reading it too!

Ah ... Rilla ... I have written about that book, too and the ending of that always felt like such a cliff hanger to me even though of course Rilla must have got together with Ken :D

Valancy was just so lovable, awkward and clever without knowing it. Montgomery painted such an evocative picture of Muskoka, beautiful and idealistic without being unrealistic. :)
