Chapter 24
Throughout the twenty-two years of his life, Sho had never felt so panicky and distraught. His father was out of control and he didn't know what he could do to stop him.
Was that really the man he loved and looked up to when he was little? His father used to be a newspaper columnist. Although he was too young to understand what his father wrote in his column, he still cut out his father's column every day from the newspaper that his father brought home and kept them in a scrap book. He showed the scrap book to his father once and told his old man that he would work hard to learn in school so he could understand his father's writings soon. After all these years of agony and moving from place to place, he still kept the scrap book with him. It was the only good memories he had of his father.
But the man that he saw as his role model was long gone. What’s left in the man was only selfishness, greed and unscrupulousness. And this man could possibly be hurting the person he loved so much and the family who had been so loving and caring to him. He couldn’t let that happen.
Satoshi, I couldn't let papa hurt Satoshi -- I need to warn him --
Sho took out his phone and started dialing Ohno's number. Although he had promised himself never to contact Ohno again, but under the circumstances, Ohno's safety was clearly more important.
"Leave message at your own risk, I may not call you back..."
It went straight to Ohno's voice mailbox. Sho disconnected and dialed again. Voice mail again.
Why don't you answer your phone, Satoshi?
Sho looked at his watch. It's not even ten o'clock yet, Ohno should not be sleeping so early. May be he went out. Sho felt a slight relief. But there's still a chance that he could be wrong and Ohno was still in the villa, which could mean possible confrontation with his father. And there're also Ohno's parents that he concerned about. He couldn’t take any chances on what the desperate man might do if he was confronted. He’d got to warn them.
Nino! Nino might know where Satoshi is -
Sho waited no time and dialed Nino’s number on his phone. He was glad that it was picked up almost right away.
“Sho-kun, I’m so glad you called tonight. This waiting till tomorrow is killing me - ” Nino was happy when he saw Sho’s number on the display.
“Nino, is Satoshi with you?” Sho cut his friend off. “He’s not answering his phone.”
“Ohno-kun? No, he’s not with me. Wait, you called him? Are you coming back to him then?”
“Do you know if he’s at home? Are his parents at home?” Sho asked anxiously.
“Just come back already. Are you planning to give them a surprise? Ohno-kun will be so happy - ”
“Stop! Nino, there’s no time for this. I really need to know if they’re at home. It’s - really urgent!” Sho interrupted once again.
“Why? What’s with all the urgencies?” Nino was confused. “You had me took Ohno-kun away from campus in a hurry today and now so anxious to know if they’re at home. What’s going on here?”
Sho knew he had to act quickly and he needed Nino’s help. He had no choice but to tell Nino about his father’s plan.
“Your father is doing what?” Nino literally screamed. “Is he out of his mind?”
“Nino, we have to warn Satoshi and his parents. I don’t want them to get hurt. Can you keep calling Satoshi and ask him to get himself and his parents out of the house as soon as possible? I’ll go after my father and tried to stop him.” Sho knew he couldn’t waste another second if he wanted to stop anything bad from happening.
“I remembered Ohno-kun said that his parents had a banquet or something tonight, so they might not be home. But I don’t know where he is. Oh, let me call Jun-kun, he’s staying in the villa, he may know.” After calming himself down a bit, Nino started to analyse the situation.
“Jun-kun? Satoshi's cousin? He's back -- and in the villa? Oh no!” One more person in the villa meant one more person that his father could hurt. “Nino, keep calling them. If you can get in touch with any one of them, ask them to leave the house as soon as possible and stayed away until I call you. Understand? I've got to go now.”
“Wait! Sho-kun, I think you should call the police. It's a serious crime that your father is committing. He could put many people in danger, including you.”
What Nino said was a thought that Sho had been suppressing in his mind. His conscience told him it's the right thing to do, but the sentient side of him couldn't bring himself to send his father to prison. No matter what he's still his son.
“I've got to go. I'll call you later.” Sho ignored Nino’s suggestion and hung up the phone.
Sho stared at the phone for a good few moments. He's struggling on whether he should call the police. What Nino said was true. It had become a dangerous situation and needed to be stopped and he had no confidence in doing it by himself. The image of his father holding the knife against the Ohno’s gave him a chill. Without further thinking he dialed the emergency number.
“This is the police. What's your emergency?”
“Y -- Yes, I think I heard some strange noises outside my house. Can -- can you send someone over to check it out?”
“Can you see anything or anyone?”
“No, it's -- probably nothing. Ne -- nevermind.”
“That's OK. We'll send some officer over to check it out. What's the address?”
“Thank you. The address is xxxxxx”
Sho gave the police the address of the villa and hung up the phone. All he wanted was the police siren to scare his father away before he actually carried out the bulgary. He didn’t want his father to be caught in action and got arrested.
Sho headed to the villa as fast as he could, hoping he could get his father out of there before any crime was committed or anyone got hurt. But what he saw in front of the villa almost made his heart stopped.
He saw two police cars stopped in front of the house. The flashing lights on top of them are still on. There were a lot of people there. It seemed all the servants were out there and there was a lot of noise. Sho didn’t want to go inside the gate to be noticed, so he just observed from afar. He looked through the crowd and tried to locate the Ohno’s to make sure they were alright, and hopefully wouldn’t see his father anywhere nearby.
There was no ambulance or paramedics, which was a good sign.
When his eyes landed on Ohno’s face, he froze for a moment. This face, one that he had missed seeing for weeks was not far from him. He had the urge to just go up there and fell into Ohno’s arms, but this was neither the time nor place and he knew it. At least now he saw that Ohno was unharmed, which he was really thankful for.
He forced his eyes to move away from that lovely face and continued to look around. He didn’t see Ohno’s parents but he saw Jun who was standing close to Ohno. He eased up a bit now that everyone in the Ohno household seemed to be alright.
Then suddenly noises of disturbance aroused and Sho’s attention was immediately shifted to the front door of the house where the crowd of people was starring at. He saw two people in police uniform escorting a third person in between them walking out from the house. The one who got escorted had his head down so his face could not be seen.
Oh no! Papa -
As much as Sho resented his father, he didn’t have the heart to see his old man being sent to prison, especially not via his own hands. Though he had wanted to disown his father a million times, he still felt that betraying one’s father like this was the most despicable thing a son could ever do. Guilty feelings immediately possessed him.
Just as he was about to run up to his father before the police took him away, the escorted man lifted his head. It was Tanaka! Not his father! Sho halted his footsteps and looked into the police cars but there was no sign of anyone being inside. He looked around and nobody else was being escorted out. His father was not caught.
Sho was relieved. He would not have forgiven himself if his father was arrested because of his call to the police. Not that his father didn’t deserve it, but a son sending his own father to prison was not something within Sho’s filial standards. He saw Tanaka being put in handculfs and guarded into the police car. The officers talked to Ohno and Jun for a bit and then drove away.
The servants gathered in front of the house gradually retreated back inside and everything started to quiet down as if nothing had happened. Ohno and Jun still remained outside the house and were talking to each other.
“Sho!”
A call to Sho’s name broke the silence. Guilty conscience made Sho thought that it was his father calling. But when he turned around, he saw it was Nino coming towards him. The call also caught Ohno and Jun’s attention and both men looked outside the gate. They spotted Sho and both ran towards him as well.
Sho felt that all of a sudden the whole world was closing in on him. Even though he had longed to see Ohno, longed to be closed to him, but at this moment Ohno’s presence is condemning. Ohno having to give his father money, their home almost got bulgarized by his father, all of these happened because of him, because he brought his father into their lives. Ohno’s father was right, he was nothing but an encumbrance to Ohno and his family. The farther he was away from them the better. He couldn’t face Nino and Jun either. He didn’t live up to his promises for being truthful to his friends. He could already imagine Nino came down on him with question after question which he wasn’t ready to answer, not after all that had happened in just one single day and his mind has nothing but confusion.
Sho couldn’t breath. He had to get out of there, away from all of them, away from the world. All he could do is - run. He turned around and ran as fast as he could, ignoring the three voices that were calling for him from behind.
“Sho! Come back!” Ohno shouted as loud as he could as he ran after his boyfriend but Sho didn’t stop. “Don’t run away from me again!”
Nino caught up with Ohno and Jun. “What happened here? Why is Sho running away?”
“I don’t know, but I’m not going to let him get away this time.” Ohno slowed down a bit so he could talk to Nino but didn’t stop his footsteps. “Jun-kun will fill you in. I will call you when I caught up on him.” He sped up again and ran towards Sho’s direction.
“But - ” Nino sighed watching his friend disappeared in the darkness.
“Let him go. He’ll probably give you a punch if you stop him from going after Sho-kun.” Jun wrapped his arm around Nino’s shoulder. “Come on in. I’ll tell you what happened tonight after we received your call. It’s chaotic.”
