I was thinking that, if you reduce your enemy (or opponent) to a single dimension (evil, greedy, cruel) you not only miss his other dimensions (which make him human and understandable) but you also allow him to create the version of himself that lives in your mind ( Read more... )

Also... not to be too cynical, but if I model my opponent accurately as the multidimensional entity that they actually are, it's much easier for me to protect myself and others from them, defeat them, neutralize them, or convert them into allies.

Never underestimate an opponent. Nobody's a cardboard cutout...well, unless one gets one's jollies from fighting actual cardboard cutouts, I suppose.

OK, but see... by realizing that they are trying very hard to be one-dimensional, you have learned enough about them to realize that. Therefore, you've already done the extra analysis.

If they are trying to make themselves one-dimensional, then any other dimensions will provide a weakness. And anyway, wow...strange convergence of people I know (ok, so I haven't been on the MOO in years but still...)

(I've known him since the heyday of USENET, from talk.bizarre, back in... um... 1994? We met when I went out to a weekend-long party & wedding at dcurtisj's -- AKA Crisper Than Thou -- place... dcurtisj being the one who got married... in 1995. I think.)
