Chapter Five

In Takaki's Head...
I had a majoy headache. I couldn't do anything so I just lay there limply. I felt dead more than anything. It was pretty quiet but the light from the window seemed to worsen my headache. It was too bright. I didn't want (more like couldn't) to get up and close the curtains. Instead, I rolled over to my side and I realized that that wasn't such a bright idea. My head seared and it felt heavy. At least the light had dimmed. I opened my eyes and glanced at the bed. It was made and Daiki was nowhere to be found. But from what I could see, there was articles of clothing, neatly laid out. I slid my eyes to the dresser and squinted to see the time. 1:00 P.M. Damn. Well there went half of my day. To be honest, I'm not really bothered much by it. I was much too tired to feel anything really.

I looked upat the ceiling and let out a slow breath, I just continued to blink and then something small caught my eye. I looked closely and I saw that it was one of those sticky glow-in-the-dark stars.

"Sugoii! Where'd you get them Takaki?" Daiki exclaimed as he held the stars out on his palm. Takaki grinned down at him and patted his head.
"Never you mind!" He smiled and Daiki just shrugged and continued to marvel at the small objects. Then, a small frown crossed his face.
"Ne, where will I stick them?" Takaki's grin faded and it was replaced by a look of deep thought. Then he snapped his fingers.
"I know! Stick them on your ceiling!" Daiki's eyes twinkled and then dimmed. Takaki frowned.
"No--?" Takaki mumbled. Daiki sighed.
"I can't reach, even if I stand on something." Daiki saw Takaki's disappointed look and thought quick.
"I promise I'll stick them up as soon as I grow! Well, as soon as I can reach while standing on something." Daiki was more determined then he let on but it was enough for Takaki who beamed.
"Hai! Grow fast!" Takaki grinned while Daiki punched his arm.

Wow. I would think that remembering things that have been long since forgotten would just irritate the migrane it felt like I was having. But somehow, it felt rather soothing. Just like welcoming a friend in after a long time. I quickly noticed more of those stars plastered in random places on the ceiling. I don't know how long I lay there, entranced by the stars and the memories they carried, but I head the slam of a door downstairs and my head reacted rather violently towards the loud noise. However, I found that I had a decent amount of strength to get up and change. I sat up slowly and held on to a nearby desk for support.

I took my time, not wanting the dizziness to return. I let out a puff of air, and it had a horrible taste. Yuck. Morning breath and alcohol just don't mix. Breathing through my nose I slowly made my way over to Daiki's bed and found a note:

Hey Takaki,
So, you're obviously awake if you found this note. Just wanted to say that this was all that I could find and sorry, I haven't grown much! But for your benefit, I made sure that it wasn't anything that's supposed to reach your feet. By the way, it might be a little chilly outside! (:<
- Daiki

I grinned and put down the note. I glanced down at the pyjamas I wore. The leg was a few inches above my ankle and the sleeves revealed my thin wrists. I looked at the outfit Daiki had lain out for me and I couldn't help but to smile. It was a pair of shorts and a black shirt that said "Short Stuff" in white. I laughed quietly and began stripping off the pyjamas. I put the shorts on first and looked a myself in Daiki's vanity mirror. Why he had a vanity mirror in the first place, I don't know. But it was dead useful. The shorts fit perfectly around the waist and I pulled it down a bit. I noticed that my bare shoulders were slumped over and I straightened it. I stretched and then pulled the shirt on. I looked back at the mirror and sighed.

That was when I realized that I owed Daiki even more than I'd thought. He offered up himself as a buddy, a friend, helping me out when I needed it or just being there when I needed one. Now it was my turn to give back. It was time for me to revive that old pact the three of us had made when we were littles. It was time for me to give my all. I owed him- them- that much. I stepped out the door and I slowly went downstairs, a little bit more sober and stronger. I was ready.

Down the stairs we go, looking in from the outside...
"TAKAKI!" As soon as Takaki had hit the bottom step, his nostrils were filled with a light flowery scent.
"Careful Rei-chan, he still looks a bit sick." Daiki gently placed a hand on Reika's shoulder and she pulled back, her face was scrunched up.
"Uh Takaki, you smell." Takaki rolled his eyes.
"Yeah yeah, I know." Takaki's voice croaked and Reika looked at him sternly.
"You IDIOT! Why in the HELL would you go to a party like THAT?! WHY didn't you come home? Why didn't you even call? Why didn't you just come home like you were supposed to?" Each question pierced Takaki's heart one by one. He felt like he was about to crumple down at Reika's feet, but he managed to stay upright. However, he didn't look into her eyes. Instead, he jammed his fists into his pockets and looked at the floor, willing himself not to break.
"Takaki..." He didn't look up, but he recognized Daiki's voice. It was calm and soothing.
"Takaki, it's okay." Takaki looked up and saw Reika's eyes brimmed with tears. She was hugging herself tightly around her waist and that's when he broke. He sniffed and tried to wipe the increasing liquid from his eyes. Daiki was pained to see them cry but he forced himself to keep himself together and that took much of his will power.
"It's okay now Reika. Takaki's here now it's okay." Daiki patted Reika's back and she stepped away from him, leaving Daiki's hand in mid-air. She had stepped towards Takaki and looked him square in the eye. In a second, she threw herself back on to him and held him tight. Takaki stumbled backward but hugged her back. Daiki lowered his hand and let a tear slide down his cheek. He quickly brushed it away and went to the kitchen, leaving brother and sister a little privacy. He busied his hands by making some tea and placing it on the table. But his mind was absent. He was both sad and happy. Sad obviously because of the pain Reika endured and pain because of the trouble Takaki just faced. However, he felt happy because the three of them were there, together. He couldn't remember the last time the three of them had been together, but he knew that that was a long time ago. He just knew that now, they were all together and that was all that mattered.
