So I go in on fanfiction.net. Find a title that sounds remotely interesting. Read the introduction of the first chapter, and think 'My, perhaps I have found someone who actually stayed awake in school! :D', and read on.

And I see author's notes.

I certainly know how you feel. Especially when it's something useless like you've pointed out.

I think I might have done A/Ns once, though. Thankfully, my dad was looking through a story of mine and told me it was a bad idea.

I do them at the beginning, most of the time because I have to explain what the hell I'm writing. xD But I agree with the randomly throughout the story. Just...ergh.

Aren't mid story Author Notes against the rules in FF.N anyway? Not that anyone reads the rules anyway. >=(
