I don't have a lot to say, so this will be quick.

Authors, when you're posting lit of yours up, make sure that your author's notes, description, babbling, etc, is grammatically correct. You should be sure to spell things correctly and cut down on the abuse of emoticons.

I don't know how many times I've passed fics over because their cut said ( Read more... )

formatting, bad grammar

Man... I'll admit I suffer an emoticon addiction. Your rant now has me wondering if I used them in my drabble's summaries! *Goes to check and edit*

Thanks for the reminder!

(And I watched the last season of America's Next Top Model)

A couple here and there is nothing to be ashamed about (I'm sure I've used three at one time in a single comment). I just hate it when they use the same face over and over. It's like, "Okay, you think that's funny, and that, and that too, and this one over here..." and then things stop being funny.

(Yay, a fellow viewer! I hate those kinds of shows but for some reason ANTM just grabs ya.)

I'm more tolerant to emoticons than chat-speak. Like, "when ppl write leik dis, u know?". That is my biggest turn-off when I'm reading a fanfic. Of course, if it's the summary, I don't even bother reading it.

Oh, and author's notes in the middle of the story. Specially if they use them to comment how hot a character is, or to avoid descriptions aka "(A/N: Sora is wearing his KH2 clothings)". But that's another rant.

(I barely have time to watch TV these days, but I was addicted to that show for some reason. Top Chef too, but sadly, both shows ended in my country last week.

Mmm... Maybe it was the fact that I wanted to see Jade being kicked out of the contest, although that happened at the very last episode!

Yay for being OT! :D )

That's acctually an excellent point. This is the most interesting rant I've seen in awhile, as entertaining as Rant No.100 on "Why Zexion isn't emo" or "Nobodies Have No Emotions" can be.

I think it's the nature of LJ, we emote and are far less formal, but at the same time provided that we are a decent author, would never put ^_^ or :) in a ff.net summary submission nor would we write it in the body of a fic.

Why indeed should we do it on LJ?

Hooray for being interesting! (This is a new phase in my life! :D )

Casual emoting (why does that sound like a euphemism for sex?) is very fun and comfortable. Sometimes I wish I wasn't so neurotic about spelling and grammar. But, yes, there are places to use emoticons and gibberish and places not to use them.

You know what I hate? Summerys that say-

"I suck at summerys. Just read it."

Or even worse-

"i can't write summery lol rofl just r&r k?"

Do they really think someone's going to read that?

(Yeah, overuse of emoticons sucks too. Kinda gets old if not used in moderation.)

Like others have said, bad grammar is much worse than an abuse of emoticons. I think it's sad that someone would pass over a potentially good fic because of an emoticon addiction in their author note. Bad grammar I can see..But not the overuse of computer faces :P
