I am reminded as I plan to go give blood tomorrow that not everybody understands this and some people have misconceptions about the process. Therefore, I will attempt to enlighten you. Ask any questions you like. ( This got really long )
Moral and logical grounds actually, the petition to the Canadian agency stated that the risk in allowing gay donors (and their erstwhile) partners would not significantly increase the risk of disease, and that such donors were often safer due to increased caution or even due to the fact that a good number are sexually monogamous....but still no.
Unfortunately, there are also some of us who would love to give blood but are not allowed for other reasons. Certain non-contagious disorders that have no bearing on blood still keep you off the list. I have NASH (Non-Alcoholic Steato Hepatitis) which is also called Fatty Liver because of too much fat has deposited in the liver and I am not allowed to donate. This is some freak thing that was diagnosed at 20 and stops me from doing my part and donating. Just be proud that you can and are doing so.
Also, where did you get that icon and can I steal it? (With credit of course!)
I stole it from someone who'd stolen it from someone, and evidently it was first made by shann. Steal away!
It's such a bummer, the things that can keep you from donating. My mother has hemochromatosis, which causes iron to build up in her blood and could hurt her liver, and the treatment is to lose a pint of blood every few months. The Red Cross won't take the blood though, and it's awful. Some of the restrictions are pretty ridiculous.

I think...I may be OK. Although the amount of thought required to actually answer the question is, heh, mind-boggling.
