Everywhere I look now a days, I see - Atheists, slamming whatever article they're commenting on, "pitying" those whom "stupidly" believe in something greater then ourselves

I'm an atheist who finds most other atheists to be assholes. Just because I don't believe doesn't mean you can't or that you're wrong for doing so. There's so much elitism in religion AND anti-religion. By hitting back at organized religion and calling people stupid is the same sort of herd mentality and bigotry that they were probably protesting in the first place!
I don't want people pushing their religion on me so I respect them enough to not push my atheism on them. It's a simple principle that is easily forgotten. Jesus said 'do unto others' etc and I think that's a wise philosophy whether you follow one faith, another faith, or no faith.
I refer to that as "evangelical atheism." Much like other evangelists, they are completely sure that they are Right (TM) and have to make sure that you know, and everyone knows, that they are Right (TM). Religious extremism is popular everywhere these days, and if your religion is atheism, there's no reason you can't be an extremist about that as well.
