The in-process drawing you texted me illustrates your story here. I was looking at the drawing trying to see what it was you were drawing, and which side was up, and then I saw the dark rock and realized where I was. Getting these in-processers is fun. I like how there is some tone behind the bush that is like a fog and obscures the path beyond the immediately known. You just have to trust yourself and keep on going. What we mostly seek, is certainly there, just over the ridge.

I'm trying to decide if this drawing is even intelligible. But maybe that's the point. Complete disorientation. I was just looking at it though, and reflecting on the time I spent drawing it (hours past my bedtime!), and I am appreciating all the little nuances of exploration that are going on in this "place." It's almost like a little map of a place we can only get to when we go inside ourselves. I'm liking this direction. Perhaps it's not the most direct or emotive art, but it's leading me somewhere new. And I like that I drew from a positive experience -- hiking with my daughter -- after enduring so many consecutive brutal days that I haven't done a single creative thing other than write that poem last week. It felt so nice to work with pencils again. I love their simplicity and their ability to relay so many variations of line, shading, form, nuances of composition. But for me, they are just conduits to get the interior onto an exterior surface.
