Oh natto, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways...

I was watching another one of those ridiculous Japanese variety TV shows where they were talking about natto and the different ways you could eat it. Now, I love natto, but some of the natto dishes were rather wild:

Natto mixed with mayonnaise
Natto mixed with sugar (seems this is common in northern Japan)
Natto on toast and noriNatto spaghetti ( Read more... )

japan is crack, jtv

I go with soy sauce, a bit of karashi/mustard, and negi. I am not Japanese enough yet to actually like daikon oroshi. Or maybe just not mature enough.

Though, I think mayo and sugar are not that uncommon, right? There was this scene in Shinsengumi (one of the earlier episodes) where everyone is discussing how they eat their natto. Pretty funny. Anyway, Yamanami-san, being from the north does say that he eats it with sugar.

You *must* watch that series for god's sake!

I think I balk at the idea of natto being sweet. Mayo isn't that bad, I guess. Definitely better than curry rice mayonnaise. Wouldn't natto mayo taste different depending on whether you used Japanese or American mayo? I seem to remember that Japanese mayo was...sweeter?

Slightly off-topic: I have this irrational revulsion of Kewpie mayo. I think it's the doll logo that does it.

What?! You don't like Kewpie mayo? But it's the best thing ever!! Yes, we have one in this house....

Would it disgust you greatly if I tell you that when I was a child, I had a thing about mayo over white rice?

It's weird, I don't like the logo--I've never liked dolls. Plus the whole squeeze bottle seems so wrong. Like I said, it's irrational.

Hahahaha, mayo over rice! That's just like the Hijikata from Gintama! (Yes, bringing it back to manga...)

I believe they said that it tasted like natto gone bad.

That statement is hilarious because natto is, essentially, something gone bad.
*amused* Even though it is really, really good. :D

Exactly! Everyone was going, "WTF natto gone bad AHAHAHA" while commenting on how bad yoghurt + natto tasted.

I too love natto.

However, none of those dishes sounded appealing. Sweet + natto just sounds nasty.... O.o

I know! It's just...wrong. Natto shouldn't be sweet.
