Just realised I haven't updated in ages.  Oops.  Sorry about that...

My free time has mostly been taken up with the Pulpympic Games at pulped_fictions, which is turning out to be enormous fun.  I've written two drabbles, which I'll probably post here at some point, and reading everyone's contributions has been really great (if rather time consuming ( Read more... )

Between the ducks and the conference, it sounds like it's been quite a week!

I always find conferences kind of amusing from an anthropological angle -- it's fun to watch the dynamics of people interacting. Especially when people with egos get involved. ;)

As for the magical laundry -- I don't know how well this would actually work on wool, but I thought the way it was written, the laundresses were ironing Cazaril's clothes? I think that was supposed to be what got them mostly dry. I've definitely had that experience with ironing cotton and rayon. But I suppose wool could be a different sort of problem.

Or maybe LMB was accidentally thinking of ship's knits? ;)

Yes. There weren't any egos here particularly, but it was interesting from the point of view that it seemed to be a very close-knit set of people who all knew each other well, but not in a snobby or exclusive way.

And I met the guy who wrote my text book, so that was pretty cool. (He wasn't the one talking about masturbation, just so you know.)

That's true, they are ironed (he spends ages wittering on about how nice ironed clothes smell, bless him) and I guess that could work (and would indeed leave the seams a bit damp I guess). Maybe if that was combined with a very efficient method of wringing out?

That conference sounds interesting. I took a History of the English Language course last semester, and I enjoyed learning more about that time period.

I never really noticed that detail about Caz's clothes. Have fun in your re-read. I've been thinking I should re-read both Chalion and Paladin of Souls.

Yes, I'm really enjoying it. We're reading various sagas at the moment, and I love all the little human details. And the nicknames! When someone's known as Olaf the Peacock, you know just what sort of a guy he is, lol.

High altitude?

I used to live at about 1500 metres, and even in winter things used to dry incredibly quickly when the sun was out.

Also, Cazaril is likely to be closer to the Equator than we are in the UK...

Really? I never knew that happened. Do you know why it is?

I've no idea, though I suspect it may have something to do with the sun having less atmosphere to burn through, and the lower boiling point of water at higher altitudes.

Of course I've now gone off in a daydream wondering what lecture the ducks were heading for, and whether they carry their books in their quackpack...

*coughs, and moves on swiftly to tumble dryers*

What worries me, is that even in Caz's time I still wouldn't get out of ironing clothes. I don't envy the laundresses at all as it does seem a very tight schedule.

It's a pity you weren't doing the poetry at Pulped after that lecture. LOL!

LOL. Maybe if you were only laundering your husbands clothes he might just have to like it or lump it? That is, if you could put up with all the gossip about you being a neglectful housewife... ;)
