*jumps on the Devin Grayson bandwagon*

So I've been thinking about this post for a couple days, and the recent Devin links on WFA got me to decide to make it.

Caveat: I have not read Inheritance, to my great sorrow and despair, and thus will not be discussing it. I have read Devin's run on both NIGHTWING and GOTHAM KNIGHTS ( Read more... )

Dingsi? Check me on this? Is it applicable there?
Sure. Also, you posted a link--nothing's wrong with links. (Have skimmed your entry to make sure I can answer the question as quickly as possible, will read it in its entirety later and perhaps even *gasp* comment on it.)

I can pretty much guarantee it wouldn't be as creepy as the stuff you just wrote, you scary person. But yeah, I will, too. And ditto on the crushing.

So much *word*. I have read Inheritance, and I do think it suffers for how she portrays Ollie, but one thing is clear - she *gets* Nightwing. She understands that he will drown in his own neurosies, if left to his own devices, she gets how important his friends are, what the shooting of Blockbuster would do to him. It might have been dark and unhappy, but I trusted in her ability to have him follow that heroic journey, to go as low as it's possible to take him, and then shoot him back up into the stratosphere. Her Gotham Knights run is some of my favourite comic writing, because it's so *them*. Same with the Titans - her run on Titans was wonderful, for Nightwing-the-leader, for the Roy/Donna, for the relationships between them all. I'm sick of all the ragging on her - she's not a perfect writer, and I'm sure she knows she's got room for improvement. Point me at a writer that doesn't.

Also: At no point in Devin's various runs, did anyone turn into a tentacle monster.

So far, the general consensus seems to be that the weakest part of the novel was Ollie. Also possibly the subtext, depending on who you ask.

*Yes*. That. Exactly. She was putting that boy through hell, but I trusted her to do it well and to bring him back out.

I've read bits of her run on the Titans, and I think that's something most often forgotten by her detractors -- she has written Nightwing-the-leader. And done it well. She knows how to do so, and if she's writing him emo? It's because that's what fits the story, not because she can't do anything else.

BWAHA. Very good point! I have yet to see anyone who likes current Nightwing, and I know several people who contemplated framing various Devin issues.

P.S. I never, EVER do this (because usually it's waaaay too painful and distracting), but I just took a peek at the comments your post had generated, and in addition to so very much appreciating everyone's support, you have to tell PaperVolcano for me that "Also: At no point in Devin's various runs, did anyone turn into a tentacle monster," is now my laptop wallpaper. ROFLMAO! That's the most righteous, inarguable compliment I have ever received (and in Whedonese no less -- awesome!). ::Grins:: Plus, I hereby solemnly swear to keep it that way.

Love to all!
