Tale Two
The Sleeping... Beauty?
For
renichifreak Once upon a time there was a handsome prince. One day he was riding through the forest and he heard a beautiful song. The prince became curious and investigated the source of the most wonderful music he had ever heard. To his surprise, he discovered a beautiful maiden. Not wanting to disturb her, he watched her sing from the shelter of the trees. Day after day he returned to listen to her songs yet never once did he speak to her.
One afternoon the prince rode out into the forest with the intention of spending the afternoon listening to her songs, yet when he arrived no song could be heard. He waited, hoping that something had simply delayed her and she would arrive shortly, but she did not come.
It was nearly nightfall when the prince saw, through the trees, three glowing lights. As the lights drew near, he saw that they were people with shimmering wings on their backs and dressed in flowing robes one of green, one of blue, and one of pink. They introduced themselves to the prince as Jungmin, Hyungjoon, and Kyujong, fairy protectors of the beautiful maiden he had seen.
The prince was astonished but listened to their tale as they told of how the maiden was in truth a princess, cursed to die at birth by an evil witch. To save the princess, the fairies had taken her into the woods and looked after her. Yet for all their care she had still fallen to the witches curse, changed over time, but cursed nevertheless.
The princess, they told him, lay at the top of a tall tower guarded by a vicious dragon and dangerous magic. They pleaded with the prince to save her and he agreed. He could never let a woman such as her perish at the hands of evil. To aid him in his quests, the fairies gave him armor of the strongest kind, a sword that would be swift and deadly, and a shield, stout and firm with which to protect himself.
With the gifts, the prince rode off to the tower to save the maiden but the forest itself reached out to stop him. He swung and hacked with his sword, fighting his way through branch by branch. When he finally reached the tower, the dragon was waiting for him. He fought bravely and narrowly missed the fiery breath that spilled from the creature’s mouth or the powerful swipe of its talons. Somehow the prince managed to slay the beast and he rushed without pause into the tower.
The stairs were long and harrowing and woven with magic that sought to stop him, but he pushed through it all. When he reached the top there lay the princess, sleeping peacefully on a bed made of flower petals. At last he had reached her side and he moved swiftly to her. Then he knelt beside her and placed true loves kiss on her lips. The moment they touched, the princess’s eyes fluttered open. It was love at first sight and they pledged to be wed.
Later that very same month they were tied together in marriage. The prince was thrilled. He had found his princess and broken the curse. Little did he know the surprise that awaited him on their marriage bed, for that night he discover that his beautiful maiden was a not a woman, but a man-
“Nuh uh,” a small girl of six years of age interrupted. “Mommy isn’t a man. Men can’t have babies.”
“That’s right,” the boy sitting beside her that looked identical to her in every way agreed. “And mommy had us.”
“Well you see,” the prince began, staring down at his children. “Your mommy had fairy godfathers who decided to give mommy a gift. They took mommies insides and-” he stopped abruptly as a ball of yarn bounced off the side of his head. There was only one person who could have been responsible for it and he turned to look at his spouse who was sitting and knitting near the fireplace.
“Your father is being silly again,” his spouse said, giving him a very pointed look. “Aren’t you Hyunjoong?”
“Of course I am,” he agreed after a moment. Then he smiled knowingly. “After all if your mommy wasn’t a girl she wouldn’t be wearing that beautiful blue gown now would you, Youngsaeng?”
“Of course not,” Youngsaeng agreed, with a thinly veiled glare.
“See,” his daughter said triumphantly. “I knew it. And uncle Jungmin, uncle Hyungjoon, and uncle Kyujong aren’t fairies.”
“Well how do you know that?” Hyunjoong asked.
“Because they don’t have wings,” his son informed him as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“What if they are hiding their wings?” Hyunjoong asked his children.
“Fairies can’t hide their wings,” his daughter said with a laugh as if he was being ridiculous.
“What is this I hear about wings?” a voice from the door called.
“Uncle Jungmin!” the twins squealed, leaping to their feet and running to him. He scooped one up in each arm and turned to display them to the two men who had followed him through the door.
“Daddy says that fairies can hide their wings,” the little boy declared.
“He did now,” Kyujong said with a smile.
“Yeah, and he said that you were fairies,” the little girl agreed.
“Oh well, can fairies do this?” Hyungjoon asked grinning. He held out empty hands, palm up. Then with a flourish he closed his fists and spun his hands through the air before stopping palms up once more. This time on each palm sat a small piece of candy.
“Cool!” the little girl exclaimed reaching for one.
“If you are fairies can you give us gifts like the ones in the story?” the little boy asked as he reached for his candy.
Hyungjoon took him into his arms and gave him a contemplative look. “Well what would you want?”
“No giving gifts to my children,” Hyunjoong said sharply, but the men were already out the door with the two children in their arms chatting animatedly. Kyujong bowed politely and offered Hyunjoong what he hoped was a reassuring smile before following the pair with the children.
Youngsaeng laughed and turned his attention back to his knitting. “Well, when you tell them a made up story they think its truth but when you tell them a true story they don’t believe you in the slightest. Perhaps you should just tell them your fish story next time.” Hyunjoong scowled, picked up the ball of yarn, and threw it at Youngsaeng’s head.
