Title: Hi-tch Hi-ker's Guide
Series/Characters: [Reborn!] Fukurou (Mukuowl)+Hibird, Hibari
Disclaimer: Amano's. Not mine.
Word Count: 515
Warnings: ... crack. Irredeemable crack. My integrity may never recover.
Notes: First draft was cute and quite non-suggestive. Unfortunately it was under the word limit so in order to increase the word count, I-ah-did something I probably shouldn't have done. And it didn't really help since the lyrics just didn't fit in as well as they could've because of the odd verb tenses. :\ For the first round of the KHR Lyrics Wheel Challenge.
Prompt: "Never Let Me Down Again" by Depeche Mode (I know, I know... Hibird =/= Depeche Mode orz). Complete lyrics at the end of the ficlet.

Mist-heavy morning greets them as they rouse awake together in rolling shivers of dewdrops and shed feathers. They had met, by chance, the night before-a most unlikely pair coming to roost on the very same cherry tree branch.
Stretching its wings, Hibird blinks questioningly at its larger companion who is all the evermore sedate and deliberate in his movements.
Where to next?
The white owl hoots, a softly encouraging “kuhuhuhu,” before extending his wing towards the sunrise. Hibird follows the red-eyed gaze to the east, and remembers the soothing warmth of his favorite perch’s dark nest of hair, the authoritative voice of he who doled out the instructions:
“You will first investigate the major sites of ring activity that have taken place in the last three weeks and take pictures of anything that looks to be suspicious or out of place. You will then meet with a contact near the Kokuyou lands-you know the rest. Do not engage in combat. Come back right away if the situation is unfavorable.
Oh, and relay this message if he acts at all in such a manner that warrants it...”
“Come with me to Kokuyou,” Fukurou croons. “Don’t you wonder how much it has changed?” The white wings are stretched to their full capacity, an impressive span indeed. Hibird almost compliments him but clicks its beak down on the traitorous sound of admiration.
Instead, it cocks its head to the side and makes a show of painstaking deliberation on the offer. Finally it flaps its own wings in acquiescence-but not before chirping twice for good measure. “Namimori is better! Better!”
“Hu~.” If an owl could snort, Fukurou would have done so by now. “He would think so wouldn’t he.”
“Bite you dead! Bite you dead!” Thus saying, Hibird hops onto the larger bird’s back and, grasping tightly into the soft downy layer with spectacular balance (if it may say so itself), gestures imperiously towards the general direction of Kokuyou. “I’m taking a ride. Onward, ho!”
“... I’m going to have to have a good long talk with your owner when this is all over,” Fukurou mutters dryly, ruffling his breast feathers in a rare show of mild irritation. Regardless, he shifts a bit to accommodate the extra weight before taking off on silent wings towards Kokuyou.

“And he then proceeded to ‘show you the world’?” Hibari questions, a disbelieving quirk to his mouth.
Hibird trills and bobs its head in affirmation. “As long as I remember who’s wearing the trousers.”
Lips press together, thin, and Hibari sighs his resignation. “... if that’s all to the report, you are dismissed,” he tells the bird shortly, though he does nothing to dislodge his passenger from its secure nest atop his head.
Fishing out his cell phone from his suit pocket, Hibari speed dials a familiar but not-often used number.
Upon immediately hearing the beep following Mukuro’s condescendingly saucy voicemail prompt, Hibari forces his displeasure through clenched teeth and into the receiver. “Joke or not, I thought I told you not to try and seduce my bird!”

Never Let Me Down Again
by Depeche Mode
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
He knows where he's taking me
Taking me where I want to be
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
We're flying high
We're watching the world pass us by
Never want to come down
Never want to put my feet back down
On the ground
I'm taking a ride
With my best friend
I hope he never lets me down again
Promises me I'm as safe as houses
As long as I remember who's wearing the trousers
I hope he never lets me down again
Never let me down
See the stars they're shining bright
Everything's all right tonight
