I'm about to hit the coin laundry. And in Iran, they're crying out from the rooftops into the night.

issue is so complicated. recently watched the hbo doc's 'letters to the president' and 'the queen and i'. this country's people should figure out what they're revolting in the name of before anymore of them end up hanging from trees. there will be no real 'iranian revolution' until kohmeini is exiled and the theocracy ends.

I think one of the most puzzling things about this uprising is the fact that the Iranian people aren't necessarily revolting against the theocracy, but against the theocracy's obvious abuse of power. To the West, it's difficult to understand that a "revolution" which doesn't aim to topple the established order could still be considered a revolution, but maybe that's the way it is.

Mousavi was an original revolutionary in the 70's; much of his presidential platform was for recommitting the country to the principles of that revolution. If some reform comes of this, it could well be Khamenei's exile over the way he handled the election and its consequences, and that could bring some moderation of state policies, but it doesn't seem the theocracy is headed out any time soon.

But if that's what people are willing to die for, then that's what they're willing to die for.
