Keith, John, No House

Keith Olbermann rocked my fucking world last night, as he does so often.

Watch him take on the seething mass of bull-shit that is Sarah Palin:

I finally watched John Barrowman's new video: What About Us?

The Barrowman gorgeousness is mind-boggling, especially the jacket/rain combo, but I could live without the "story-line" stuff and I ( Read more... )

The Special Comments were just perfect. Totally perfect. Someone needs to call Palin on all the bullshit, and I'm glad Keith finally did.

On John's song, the storyline isn't much, and neither is the song, really, but the man is gorgeous. So much in this vid.

Heroes is intense this week, I think you'll like it, despite the absence of one of our favorite characters.

I will leave you with this political macro:

Thank you! I wanted to love John's new song and video but I just...can't. I love his voice and I think it is entirely underused in this song that seems way too generic and boring for such a great personality and an amazing voice. I could have done without the storyline and cliches of the video too, but I do understand why he is doing it.

That being said, I think his version of Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You has potential to be stellar, it has that big finish end that he can so pull off. But yeah, From A Distance? I disliked that song the first time around...

No House tonight! Pfffft! I am just going to have to watch my Tivo'd LoM from BBCA, subtitles be damned!

The only version of From A Distance that I like is the one Cliff Richard did at Wembly, early 90's I think. VERY BIG ARRANGEMENT and not quite as sanctimonious as La Midler.

I had issues with a lot of the arrangements on Another Side as well. They tend to bury his voice in the mix, which considering what an amazing (ahem) instrument he has, is just insanity.

Maybe there should be some kind to figure out exactly WHY they picked each bit to subtitle with extra points for pointing out which ones they got wrong.

I--don't know about John's latest video. I noticed the same thing in his other music videos too. He seems to be too aware of the camera. He keeps breaking that fourth wall. That may be fine for stage, but it's annoying on film. Videos are supposed to be about the song, IMHO, not the singer. *shrugs*

I also think he should have been in the video as one of the actors. It may have made the storyline more compelling.

I actually preferred the All Out of Love video. It was pure cheese, but it showed John off perfectly, over the top hand gestures and all.

Like I said, this is very back to the future, 1992, both in style and sound.

It would be interesting to see him do a "pure plot" music video where he wasn't actually shown singing.

Oh yes, I think I need to start spamming my mom w/ these Olbermann vids...

Watching that vid of JB, I thought they were trying to drown out his voice w/ the instrumentation so we wouldn't notice that his voice is so much better than the music. His voice is like water over crystal--totally unsuited to pop of any kind. Even unsuited to rockmusicals. It's a blank slate of a voice that needs a character to go with it, and this song isn't giving him one. However, there are a few vocal moments in this song that I love. But I can't figure them out now b/c Olbermann is still talking and I've got someone on the phone...

That said, I wouldn't mind hearing him sing from a distance at all. Oh god, that's like a pun.

Spam spam spam spam. He makes the case against her so damn brilliantly. How anyone could watch that clip and even think of voting for McCain is beyond me. Of course it's beyond me how they could do that anyway.

I think John can do some kinds of pop, but he could also needs to decide which kind of singer he wants to be or at least keep the personas on different albums. I still want to see him do something like the Ella Fitzgerald songbooks and then if he wants to do a pop album do that separately. I think mixing the showtunes, pop, and cheesewhiz is a bad combo. (But the last one sold bazillion copies, so what do I know?)
