You know you'd want to play a little Metroid Fusion Ball.
Main part of Metroid I like is more or less free exploration aspect of it and trying to find all the powerups. I have no idea if that's how things continued on the GC mind you, having not played it very much yet so I'll hold for comment on those until after I've had a chance to actually play them sufficiently.
The Metroid Prime games definitely retain the free exploration aspect of the original games, it's just FPS instead of side-scroller. Other M has a lot of little hidden trinkets as well, like energy tanks and missile pods and such. The main difference is that instead of finding the main weapons and suit upgrades, these just become activated based on the story of the game, rather than finding them. Also, Other M reveals on the minimap where everything is after you finish the main part of the game as well. It doesn't show you how to get them, but it does tell you that something is there to get.
One thing I liked about Prime that was missing from Other M is the scanning. Some probably found it tedious, but I enjoyed scanning every little object and finding log entries and enemy data and Chozo lore and such. I'd have to say that the "scanning" in Other M is one of the main things I didn't like about it, especially the three or four times they locked you in first person view (meaning that you couldn't move around at all) and you had
