Help!

Nov 25, 2007 15:25

Help! is on BBC Four tonight at 7 p.m. in a restored version. You know, I'm not sure I've ever seen Help! all the way through. So I'm looking forward to finding out what I've missed.

And happy birthday, pseudnik! No wonder you're a Whovian.

film, music, birthday

Nobody has. Around 3/4 through, it totally runs out of steam and the brain switches off. I can never recall anything that happens after the bomb on the curling rink.

It's a shame that Hard Day's Night was far the better film from the point of view of plot, dialogue etc, but Help had all the good songs.

I think there's a part of my brain that just assumes if it's black and white, it must be better. But colour or not, I don't think anything could beat the press conference scene.

That and the "you look just like him" scene. That was all down to Alun Owen, a much underrrated writer, IMO. I still have my copy of the Penguin Modern Plays volume that included his play "Progress to the Park", a sort of Romeo & Juliet across the religion line set in 60s Liverpool. That vol also includes John Whiting's Marching Song, which I never liked, and Henry Livings' Stop It Whoever You Are, which I like a lot but which will never be staged again, I think, on account of the pensioner hero's sexual encounter with a 14-year-old girl (she initiates it and it's very tender and rather moving in the context, but autres temps an' all that)...

Thankyer very glad. I'm sure the only reason I remember my birthday is because it's two days after that Time Lord bloke.
