Whole-House Makeover: The Project

Aug 17, 2010 15:16

Every time I go on a trip, I come back with visions for how much cleaner and neater our house needs to be. This time it's coupled with a higher household income, resulting in....

THE WHOLE-HOUSE MAKEOVER

Here are the projects I came up with so far:
  1. CLEANING

Well, you probably know I am down with this -- for y'all, for me. I highly endorse the cleaning service idea. And the air filter idea (which I might think about again) and the please-come-take-stuff-away-idea. Though you might have to pay for that -- honestly, the best deal EVAR is these two stinky-but-cute Berkeley guys, $30 and they take your stuff (presumably including furniture, though I didn't have any, or ask about that) and give it all to thrift shops and/or social work type places that need stuff -- none of it goes to a dump. So, like, round up a LOT, LOT, LOT of stuff and let them come take it.

I have read stuff about litterboxes too, but perhaps I should read that article. Arghh. Litterboxes. Wouldn't it be more fun if they (and mine, too) were all trained to use the toilet?

You and Annie should come look at my bare, walk-in-able closets, SOON. SOON!

Their ad should totally say "Cute But Stinky Guys - $30"

Tell me about these people because Annie can't STOP saying "we should get rid of everything we own." I keep saying "ACTION NOT WORDS WOMAN". But nicer.

also our problem i think is papers, not objects, but whatever.

I should/shall post about this, but last night I did manage to go to Kohl's and find out that the sandwich press we were returning was only $30 and got a sink snaker and a memory foam pillow for Annie with that and fifteen of my own moneys. Which could have been on the list. And today I went to IKEA after I finished cleaning out my desk and got a big plant and a little plant, both of which were inexplicably labeled "money tree" even though they were totally different plants.

A foam pillow or two were on the list of house-fixers, somewhere, just not on mine because I don't even sleep with a pillow.

And the house cleaners are coming on Friday!

Yay!

Those all sound wonderful, esp. the cleaning service and air filters.

Our new place has a garbage disposal, lights in the large walk-in closets (that actually work!!! unlike our old place), and is really clean, as in, it looks great when we clean it (unlike our old place, which was falling apart and the more I cleaned, the more the underlying grunginess was revealed.) These things make a huge difference-- it's so much nicer, easier.

We took a ton of things to Goodwill when we moved-- it was good to sort through our shit and get rid of stuff.

Two things on our priority list-- a new lack bookshelf, to go under the giant window-- it will hold books and serve as overflow seating (we plan to do the foam and fabric thing and turn it into a window seat) and a new coffeetable, both from Ikea.

Mostly what we have left to unpack and deal with is books. so many books.

We'll have our own washer/dryer in about a week. I can't wait.

it's true that clay litter isn't very dusty, but it bothers me that it goes to the dump. we've been using wood pellets (like you use in a stove) which are pretty inexpensive, and they actually expand with use. plus, once the poop has been separated (and flushed), you can put them on the ground. (not around food plants: cats are carnivores, and: ick.) sadly, though, the sawdust does get tracked all over. if you had the roomba thing going on, though, it might be okay.

sarah and i are looking around for somebody to go in on us for a pallet of wood pellets. would last for freaking *ever*.
