Jongin knows what love is. He is only sixteen years old yet he has already seen true love. He sees it every day. Every time he goes down for breakfast, he sees his parents canoodling over the stove while frying some eggs. He witnesses it whenever he goes over to his best friend’s house and sees his best friend’s sister and brother-in-law cooing over their newborn. And he sees it right at this moment, in front of him over lunch. His best friend since birth, Park Chanyeol is totally head over heels in love with his boyfriend of over six months, Byun Baekhyun. He is not jealous. This is not a story about him being in love with his best friend. This is a story about him falling hopelessly in love with someone who does not know him. Jongin may have seen love but it seems like love has not seen him yet.
“Jongin, hey,” Baekhyun called, snapping him out of his reverie, “Are you okay?”
Jongin just stared at his friend for a second then slumped his head down on the table over his arms. “I don’t know Baek. It just feels like today is a gloomy day.”
“Gloomy?” Chanyeol asked “Nini, the sun is totally up. The weather forecaster said it will not rain in a few days. What ‘gloomy’ are you talking about?”
“Babe, I think he’s not talking about the gloomy weather.” Baekhyun explained to his boyfriend, chuckling. “I think our Nini is on one of those days again.”
“One of those days? What days? Babe, you are confusing me even more!” Chanyeol pouted.
Baekhyun took a deep breath and explained the situation to Chanyeol, “Honey, Jongin is just having a bad day. Obviously, it’s about his crush again.” Baekhyun then looked at Jongin who was looking at them, “Isn’t it, Jonginnie?”
Chanyeol may be a little dumb but he has a heart of gold and that’s why Baekhyun fell in love with him. Looking at them and how they work as a couple, Jongin may be a little jealous. He wants that kind of love for him. A love that is patient, patient enough to explain certain things to dense people. Patient enough to understand and accept each flaw and quirk the other has.

It was a bad day Monday for Jongin when he first saw the love of his life. He woke up late, was not able to eat his breakfast and was five minutes late to homeroom which earned him a detention. What made the day even worse was a gum got stuck under his shoes during lunch time. He slipped on a puddle in the corridor giving his bum a big hit and a bird pooped on his hair when he went out to the quad for Physical Education. Could this day get any worse? But just like what they say, there is always a rainbow after the rain. Upon entering detention, there he saw the most handsome guy he has ever seen in his life. Do Kyungsoo, student council vice president and head of the Astronomy Club. He was tasked by the teacher to handle detention for extra credits.
He will never forget the first words the guy told him. It was as if angels were singing to his ears, “Are you Kim Jongin? Please take a seat, detention has already started.” Still in a trance, Jongin took a seat at the second row directly in front of Kyungsoo and just stared at the junior student until they were dismissed from detention.
If Kim Jongin were to describe Do Kyungsoo in one word, it would be BEAUTIFUL.
He has these big round eyes that lights up whenever he turns to a page of a book that he is reading and comes across something interesting (not that Jongin stalks Kyungsoo at the library and just watch him read, because that would be creepy). Sometimes, he would see Kyungsoo narrow his eyes whenever he sees someone breaking the rules at the corridor and still find him attractive. His plump lips are so kissable that whenever Jongin sees Kyungsoo pout, his friends would tease him about how he would just want to kiss him for an eternity. His nose is perfectly shaped and so are his cute tiny ears. During bad days, Kyungsoo would be sporting a disheveled hair yet Jongin would still see him as if he is a model straight out from a magazine. His neck - - oh his neck, Jongin swears his nose could nuzzle onto it perfectly. And Kyungsoo’s height may be shorter than his but that makes Jongin more interested, it’s like he could perfectly slot the munchkin onto his tall, broad frame and never let go.
“Jongin, hey!” Baekhyun snapped his fingers at Jongin, snapping the guy out from his thoughts, “Kyungsoo’s right behind you!”
“What?” Jongin sat up straight and arranged his hair. “Is he looking?”
“Uh, no…” Baekhyun trailed and added “But it looks like he is pissed off”
“WE ARE DONE OH SEHUN!” Kyungsoo shouted at his boyfriend (now ex-boyfriend) of two years. Sehun was still following the short guy pleading to give him a chance. Kyungsoo walked straight to his friends who scared off the younger guy to leave their friend alone. Defeated, Sehun left the cafeteria in tears.
Baekhyun called over one of their classmates, Jongdae, resident gossiper. “Hey Jongdae, what happened over there?” Baekhyun asked. Jongin was all ears into the conversation.
Jongdae smiled like a Cheshire cat and sat beside Jongin across from Chanyeol. “Glad you asked,” Jongdae started, “It seems like pretty boy Sehun cheated on Kyungsoo hyung last weekend.”
What? He cheated on Kyungsoo? The most perfect man on earth? Doesn’t he know how lucky he is? Jongin thought to himself.
“Sehun has always been a cheater. What’s new? He already did that to Kyungsoo last year.” Baekhyun replied.
“That my friend is the twist, Sehun cheated on him with a girl. Oops.” Jongdae paused dramatically. “Apparently, pretty boy doesn’t know what he wants.” Jongdae finished his gossip sharing and happily went to his boyfriend, Yixing, after Baekhyun thanked him for the information.
Jongin was in deep thought when Chanyeol nudged him and asked “What is in your head, Nini?”
Jongin looked at Chanyeol and smiled. “Do Kyungsoo is single. He’s the most handsome man on earth. He’s smart, nice and perfect. Have I mentioned that he’s handsome? And nice and perfect? Oh Sehun is stupid to let that guy go.” Baekhyun just raised his eyebrow at him as he waited for him to finish what he is trying to say.
“And now that he is single… I’m gonna make Do Kyungsoo mine.” Then he stood up, took his lunch, said goodbye to his friends and went off to class decisively.
Baekhyun just looked at his boyfriend who was looking at him and said, “This is not going to end well, Yeol. But I think watching this unfold is gonna be a blast.” The two just laughed as they looked at their friend who was happily exiting the cafeteria with a determined look on his face.

Jongin was determined. He has been crushing on Kyungsoo for over a year and now that the other guy is single, it’s his chance. The thing is, said guy does not even know he exists. So for the first part of his Operation Date Do Kyungsoo (he actually listed down his game plan on a pad paper): is for him to introduce himself and make a good impression.
You can do this Jongin! He told himself as he waited outside the student council room where Kim Ryeowook, current student council president, is just seconds away from dismissing the council meeting. As soon as Jongin saw the council members stand up to get out of the room, he stood up straight a few feet away from the door with a cup of hot coffee for Kyungsoo. He knew the petite guy liked coffee as he had seen him drink them after school (not that he was stalking him again or anything).
Kyungsoo was the last to get out of the room with his best friend Kim Junmyeon. As soon as Jongin caught sight of him, he was just speechless. He extended his arm towards Kyungsoo offering him the coffee.
“Uh, thanks?” Kyungsoo said as he took the coffee and waited for Jongin to say anything. But Jongin was still starstrucked that he couldn’t get a single word out of his mouth.
“Aww, Soo, you have an admirer!” Junmyeon said as he was watching the scene, “But we have to go, Kris is already waiting at the parking lot.” pulling Kyungsoo away. Kyungsoo hastily smiled and thanked him.
“That was a disaster, Nini.” Chanyeol said as he and Baekhyun approached their frozen friend.
“Told you Yeol, watching this is going to be a blast.” Baekhyun added and laughed with his boyfriend.
At that time, Jongin was already out of his stupor and just frowned at his friends, knowing they were right. Oh god, that was embarrassing! There goes my good first impression! Then he quickly left the crime scene with two laughing idiots on his trail.
After that first embarrassing encounter, Jongin started to practice his speech in front of the mirror once he gets the courage to approach Kyungsoo again.
Jongin was in the middle of his heartfelt speech when he shrieked as Chanyeol came bouncing in his room together with his boyfriend attached to his hip. “What are you doing here?”
“We want to help you.” Chanyeol told him. “My Baekhyunnie and I came up with some plans that might be able to help you win Do Kyungsoo’s heart.”
“No thanks. Coming from you two, I’ll pass.” Jongin said which made Chanyeol pout.
“Nini! You made my Yeollie sad! C’mon let us help!” Baekhyun pleaded. “Okay, here’s the deal, Chanyeol and I will present our ideas and if you don’t like them, we will shut our traps. Deal?”
Jongin thought for a moment and eyed his friends. They seem sincere and I do need all the help if I have to redeem myself from that embarrassing first encounter with Kyungsoo. He took a deep sigh and said, “Fine. But all of these plans are going to be on my terms.”
Baekhyun and Chanyeol high fived each other.
“So what is on your shared gross mind?” Jongin asked.
“Well, we were thinking…”

Baekhyun and Chanyeol’s suggestions were out of this world. From getting Kyungsoo some butterflies ‘cause who hates butterflies? (Chanyeol’s) to getting Kyungsoo drunk and have Jongin kiss his way in. You just have to kiss the life out of Kyungsoo, and this problem is solved! (Baekhyun’s) The couple just can’t understand how crucial this plan is for Jongin. This is the love of his life they were talking about. It should be a perfect and fool proof plan. With all of the plans his two friends were spouting, Jongin knew that it’s not how he wants Kyungsoo to know him, let alone to notice him.
“Guys!” Jongin called as Chanyeol and Baekhyun were still speaking at the same time blurting out whatever they could think of. “Guys! Shut up! You are not helping!” Jongin finally shouted snapping Chanyeol and Baekhyun’s mouths shut. “Focus! First, I am not gonna get Kyungsoo butterflies, what would he do with them?”
Chanyeol started to open his mouth to respond but Jongin held his palm up to stop him. “Second, I am not gonna let my first kiss with Kyungsoo be an unmemorable drunken experience. How I’m gonna assert myself towards him should be reasonable, smart, cute and perfect… like him.”
When Jongin stopped talking, Chanyeol took it as a chance to say his thoughts out loud, “Nini, life is not perfect, and it can be unreasonable, uncanny and ugly. Remember when I first approached Baekhyun before we became friends? It was a disaster, I was a nervous wreck. But after accepting my flaws and being my nice and friendly self, look at where we are now. I even got him to be my boyfriend with just my good looks.” Chanyeol joked.
“I am not that easy, Park Chanyeol!” Baekhyun playfully slapped Chanyeol’s butt.
“Anyway, my point is, you just have to be yourself. You, my best friend, are also reasonable, smart, cute and perfect. Just like the way how you see Kyungsoo. No elaborate and perfect plan can top that. Just do it simple and without pretentions. And I know that Kyungsoo would be a fool if he does not accept you.”
“So this is the idea you two begged me to hear out?” Jongin asked eyeing both his friends.
Baekhyun was looking at his boyfriend proudly, “No, it was all his idea.” Seeing that look of pride for Chanyeol on Baekhyun’s face makes him want to see the same look on Kyungsoo.
Chanyeol may be an airhead all the time like Patrick Star but his best friend can also give enlightening speeches when it matters the most. He can’t thank his best friend enough for giving him an idea on how to approach his Operation Date Do Kyungsoo.

First thing that Jongin did when he arrived at school the next day was to go straight to Kyungsoo’s locker and drop his first confession note. He didn’t sign his name on it. He was planning to wait for Kyungsoo to arrive at his locker and wait to see for his reaction on the note. Chanyeol said to be just himself. He was a romantic and he is going to try his hardest for this operation to be as memorable, romantic and cheesy as he deem is reasonable. The bell has already ringed when Jongin decided to give up waiting since it seems Kyungsoo isn’t coming to school that day. A few seconds after, Do Kyungsoo came running to his locker. The smaller male hurriedly grabbed his stuff and ran to his first class.
Jongin continued to drop notes in Kyungsoo’s locker until he heard the rumor that Kyungsoo was having a secret admirer. It was then confirmed by Jongdae when the latter said that Kyungsoo was getting these unsigned notes every day and it was causing a buzz among Kyungsoo’s circle of friends. Smiling to himself, Jongin decided to finally sign his name on his latest note hoping that Kyungsoo will finally realize that he exists in his orbit or even on the face of the earth.
His next plan was to be cheesier, he started taping candies on Kyungsoo’s locker. At times, it would be flowers of different colors each day. One time he placed a cute owl stuff toy which reminded him of Kyungsoo. He wanted to see Kyungsoo’s reaction to all his secret admirer moves but it seems like the world is against him because he cannot see Kyungsoo’s reaction whenever he gets his treats. Either Kyungsoo’s back is turned to him or Kyungsoo’s friends are surrounding him (he has a lot!) or that he wasn’t able to catch Kyungsoo at all.
It has been three weeks since Jongin started lowkey courting Kyungsoo. The petite guy is yet to respond and Jongin hasn’t even gotten any hint that Kyungsoo knows it was him who was sending those cheesy stuff. After talking to his friends, Jongin has finally decided to be bolder. He brought a bouquet of flowers to school with the intention of finally confessing to Kyungsoo. He was waiting outside Kyungsoo’s homeroom when the love of his life started to walk towards him with Junmyeon and Kris in tow. The three guys stopped in front of Jongin and all Jongin could do was stretch out his arms and offer the bouquet of flowers to Kyungsoo. “Kyungsoo hyung, these are for you…” but before Jongin could continue, the bell rang and students started to run towards their respective classrooms.
“Soo, let’s go! The teacher’s coming!” Junmyeon called his best friend before following Kris inside their classroom.
Kyungsoo just smirked and quickly grabbed the bouquet from Jongin and quickly thanked him before entering his classroom, leaving Jongin in the corridor. Jongin was giddy after that.

It has been three days since Kyungsoo accepted his flowers with a note inside asking the other guy if they could get to know each other more. Jongin realized that he might turn into a blabbering mess again in front of Kyungsoo so he quickly slipped in a note inside just in case. But after three days, there’s still no word from Kyungsoo.
Jongin found the courage to finally walk up to Junmyeon and ask Kyungsoo’s best friend if Kyungsoo got his note and if he would ever get a shot with Kyungsoo. “I’m sorry, Jongin right? Jongin, I think you should just give up. Kyungsoo is not looking for a relationship right now. But thanks for making my best friend smile. After his break up with Sehun, he has been very mopey. Thank you for all the sweet things you have been doing for him.” At that Junmyeon left and went to find Kris so he could get a lift home.
His encounter with Junmyeon was pretty much a bust. Kyungsoo’s own best friend advised him to just give up since he does not have a chance with Kyungsoo. But what Junmyeon said about him putting a smile on Kyungsoo’s face made up for all the rejection speech that he had heard. So instead of giving up, it seems like Kim Junmyeon just gave Kim Jongin the fighting spirit he needs.

Baekhyun handed him the wireless microphone that they found at the sound control room in front of the quad beside the bleachers. It was the final game of the season for the football team. It was a big game for the school because it’s the only sport in their school that has the chance to give them a championship. Everyone in the school is present, drawing in the biggest crowd support for the team as well as its home court. While the football team and the rest of the student body are nervous for the upcoming match, Jongin was nervously preparing for the biggest performance of his life. He was finally going to show Kyungsoo that he likes him and that he is not going to give up without a fight.
“This is it, Nini.” Baekhyun pep talked him as he held both of his hands on either side of Jongin’s shoulders. “Give it your all. Yeollie and I are here to support you.”
Chanyeol nodded his head in agreement as he gave his best friend two thumbs up. Jongin was nervous but this is it, all or nothing.
“Mic test. 1, 2, 3…” he called on to the microphone as he stepped out of the control room and onto the steps leading to the quad, “I am not really a man of words but I hope with this song, I would be able to convey to you my feelings. This is for you Do Kyungsoo…”
Everyone was starting to look for the voice ringing through the quad and once they spotted Jongin, people started taking out their cameras and laughing as the instrumental version of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You played through the speakers.

“Do Kyungsoo that was for you.” Jongin shouted through his microphone as the school security dragged him out of the quad for disturbing the upcoming game. Once the microphone was out of his hands and the teacher in charge has reprimanded him, giving him detention until the end of the school year, his friends, Baekhyun and Chanyeol approached him with unreadable faces.
“What’s with the long face, Baek? Yeol?” Jongin asked as adrenaline pumped through him, “How was my performance? I know it was not perfect… I really don’t have the voice for it but, do you think Kyungsoo would finally notice me?”
Baekhyun looked at his face and said, “I’m sorry Nini, I just heard from Junmyeon that Kyungsoo wasn’t even in the crowd today…”
Defeated, Jongin sadly walked away from his friends. He felt numb and stupid after being embarrassed in front of the entire school. Kyungsoo wasn’t even there to witness his performance for him. He was already inside the almost deserted school halls, with some students still finishing up some of their activities before heading to the game, when he heard the song that he was just singing a few minutes ago playing through the hallway speakers which were meant for their daily announcements.

Can you please stop?! I really don’t want to remember that embarrassing thing I did earlier. Jongin was pleading in his mind for the crooner in the speakers to stop reminding him of his stupidity.

“That is how you sing properly, Kim Jongin.” Jongin heard the voice ringing through the hallways after the person sang a perfect rendition of Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You. Jongin knew that voice. It was the voice that he wanted to speak to him, the voice that he can never tune out amidst a chaos, the voice that he wants to hear every second of his life. It startled Jongin because he doesn’t even know if he really is listening to Kyungsoo. His legs started to lead him towards the newsroom where he knew the controls to the hallway speakers were housed. “You know, with a couple of practice, you could have hit the notes pretty well.”
Jongin was now chuckling as he ran towards the newsroom as Kyungsoo continued his speech. “So you see, I really don’t plan on going to the game. I just wanted to go home early and relax, have a good time with my cat and watch some Netflix. But I have a very nosy best friend who loves to meddle with my personal affairs. Imagine my surprise when he sent me a pretty cute video of a certain guy who apparently dedicated my favorite song to me in front of the entire school.” Jongin was already in front of the newsroom door. As he opened it, Kyungsoo stopped pressing on the broadcast button and faced the surprised Jongin behind him. “I just had to stay a bit more, started heading to the quad and wait for said guy to come and find me. However, I saw him heading away from the quad and towards the school building looking very defeated.”
Jongin was still in awe. He can’t believe that Do Kyungsoo, the actual Do Kyungsoo, not just his imagination, is actually talking to him! Let alone, broadcasting his vocal chops for him. “You saw and you liked it?”
“Eh,” Kyungsoo replied sounding nonchalant. Then he smirked and added, “You could do better I guess.” Jongin’s face fell. “Thanks for all the sweet stuff, Kim Jongin. I thought you will give up already since I saw you here looking beaten and sad. Are you finally giving up on me, Kim Jongin?”
Jongin’s eyes went wide, savouring every roll of his name on Kyungsoo’s tongue and stammered, “Uh… Nope…?”
Kyungsoo stepped towards him and smiled, up close. It was magical.
“Good. I hope I didn’t sing my favorite song for nothing.” Kyungsoo said closing the gap between them. “I expect you to step up your game this summer. You’ll never know. I might finally give in to you… Kim Jongin.” Then Kyungsoo placed a chaste kiss on his lips and walked away.
Jongin just stood there inside the newsroom, stunned. What the fuck just happened? It wasn’t the perfect first kiss but for Kim Jongin that was already more than perfect. He already got back to his senses but the feel of Kyungsoo’s lips is still lingering on his lips. He got out of the room and stared at Kyungsoo’s retreating figure. Game on Do Kyungsoo, I am getting your perfect, sweet YES.
