Just a little tutorial today. This was requested by

Getting this effect:
from this base:
.
Tools: PhotoShop 7
Knowledge: Not much is really needed. Maybe just some creativity.
Step 1: Take this
image. I cropped the image and fixed it up (
refer to step one) to look like this:
.
Step 2: Use this light texture (not sure who made it):
and set it to Screen. If lights are in the way of the face, just erase it or try rotating the texture till it fits the way you like it.
Step 3: Now, duplicate your base layer. Desaturate (Image>>Adjustments>>Desaturate) and then set to Soft Light and lower the Opacity to 63%.
Step 4: Open a new layer and fill it with #FAF6E7. Set it to Mutiply and decrease the Opacity to 76%.
Step 5: Take this light texture by
awmpdotnet:
. Set it to Hard Light. If you want differen't light textures of a similar fashion to work with, you can find more
here. Keep the Opacity at 100%.
Step 6: Use the same light texture (duplicate it) and set this layer to Soft Light.
Step 7: Go to the original base, and duplicate it. Bring it to the top of all the layers and set it to Soft Light. Lower the opacity according to how you want it to look. I set mine to 52%.
Step 8: At this point, you can either put a border (3px stroke using #FBF7F1) and call it a day like I did here:
. Or you can do some more experimenting to get effects like the following:
For the above icons, I really only took the base and manipulated it either by adding it to the icon through blending like the 1st and 3rd. Or I took the initial base and copied a portion of it so I could paste it in a new location like in the 2nd icon. For whatever method I use, I normally desaturate this new layer, so that it makes a nice contrast compared to the original focus of the icon.
Depending on, which method you go with, you should choose proper text to match. For using these light textures, I usually stick to something cursive like Carpenter ICG and follow with a little Times New Roman underneathe. Or you can always choose not to add text. Whatever you like best.
