Little excerpts from early Vol 2 Saiunkoku. No real spoilers if you're following the raw anime, but things are a bit different in the books. :P
"Seiran! What the hell do you think you're doing standing there like that!? Did you want to get killed by the lightning god?!" Seiran raised his face in surprise when someone pulled on his arm strongly.
"......Daishogun Haku......"
"Come on!! If you don't, I'll force you into the Right Uringun!!"
"Ah, I'm coming"
"Whoa talk about uncute! There's a mountain of guys wanting in our troop y'know"
"Then, let them take my spot."
With the rain pelting him, Seiran ploughed forward pushing his hair out of his eyes. As wet as he was, there was no point in hurrying. Daishogun Haku, likely reaching the same conclusion, no longer pushed him to hurry, and instead kept pace behind him.
"Hmph! Do you think that'll make me give up? You should come drinking with me just once. If you do, you won't be able to help wanting to enter my guard the next day."
"I'll pass."
"Aa, you're not being maybe being enticed by Yousei are you? Don't bother. Who knows if that guy'll even say a single word in a year. It'd be the pits. You won't be bored with us though."

"I have no plans to enter either the Left or the Right Uringun"
Seiran showed no signs of relenting, and Daishogun Haku clucked his tongue.
"As if I could just overlook someone of your skill being buried as a mere rice storehouse guard."
"Please overlook it. I'm happy with things as they are. Much more than in the past."
Realising what Seiran was referring to by the "past", Daishogun Haku fell silent. Naturally he knew the Imperial family's sword fighting style. There was no way he wouldn't recognise the form at the base of Seiran's fighting style. And if the Uringun were the best of the best, then the probability of having it recognised was very high. And so Seiran continued to refuse to enter the troop.
Yet, despite knowing that, both Daishoguns continued with their invitations.
"......Damn, I guess I'll have to try again tomorrow then. Hurry up and give in already."

"......Seiran, did you tell Shouka-san my age?"
Seeing Seiran shake his head no, Ensei took a deep breath.
"......There's a lot more to that person. Princess no doubt thinks I'm around 40 or so."
"Ensei"
"Hm?"
"Are you not going out tonight?"
Ensei couldn't answer and looked away. He sighed in resignation.
"......You realised it was me?"
"Did you think I wouldn't realise it?"
"It's been over ten years, so I thought you'd have forgotten my habits with the staff"
"If you'd lost some of your skill, I'd have forgotten. Moreover, what do you think each and every one of those we caught said? "We're looking for a man with a cross on his left cheek.""
"......Oh my."
"I'm not interested in knowing why you're going out every night fighting bandits, nor do I know why you're being sought by them, but, thanks to what you did tonight, I'll keep quiet about it. Just make sure you don't cause any trouble to the Master or Her Lady."
At Seiran's sharp statement, Ensei grinned at Seiran looking like he wanted to say something.
"...You're giving me the creeps. What?"
"Nothing. I was just thinking that you got taken in to a really good place"
"Hmph," Seiran said looking annoyed.
"Hey, about Princess. There is one thing that would take care of all her problems."
Seiran turned suddenly and started walking away. Ensei followed after him.
"You've realised it too haven't you. All that needs to be done is for you and Princess to become husband and wife," Ensei grinned.
"Princess probably doesn't have any experience with being in love. Or rather, most likely she's be unconsciously deliberately not thinking about it. Most likely she figure that if she fell in love, then marriage would undoubtedly follow, and if that happened then she wouldn't be able to bcome a government official. It's quite admirable that more than love, studying for the National Exams is more important. She's got a lot more determinations than most of the guys out there. Not to mention you're with her. So she's not likely to pay any attention to a worthless guy."
Seiran stopped and glared silently at Ensei who poked him on the cheek.
"You don't have any woman as important to you as Princess either, do you? It's pretty obvious."
".........Ensei"
Seiran's tone lowered in anger, but Ensei ignored it and continued, "Afterall, Prncess is a really nice girl, you're well suited. No doubt she'll become a wonderful woman. If you're gonna catch her, you should do it now. For one thing, there aren't likely to be that many women who're going to want to spend the rest of their lives with you given how rotten your personality is."
"......I think I'll inform Daishgun Haku about you in minute detail."
"Ah, sorry. I won't mention it again!"
"Too late," Seiran's said coldly.
