Not that I need a new project, but I'm thinking of doing some container gardening this year - easy things, like tomatoes, lettuce...maybe some hot peppers for

I found this page that has average last/first frost dates for various places in Michigan. Can't really help beyond that since I'm not familiar with your climate.

Yeah...that's the part that I have problems with - when your last frost date is suddenly almost a month later, and there's often snow right up to the last frost date instead of having actual spring, how do you plant anything and actually have your plants harvested before first frost? :-)

Do you have a place indoors where you can bring the containers on nights where it may freeze/frost?

Yes, but I also have cats who have a known history of destroying plants...so it's a toss up.

I don't live in Michigan, but I know a bit about it. Plant things that grow wild in your area. Blueberries are a Michigan classic that are hard to grow elsewhere. They'll take a little care to get started. Raspberries, blackberries, any cane plant really -- you can pretty well plant them and forget them if you want. They'll probably thrive anyhow.

I found this site which I thought might help you out.

You might also go by what is being carried in the gardening centers near your home. You may need to cover some things on nights when it is predicted to get colder than freezing temps (both in the spring and the fall) but you should be able to grow quite a bit here in Michigan. I live near Lansing and my sister-in-law lives on Thunder Bay near Alpena and we are both able grow various things. Your county and/or township government offices might also be able to help you out. Good Luck.

Here's another site you might find interesting. I haven't tried it but it might be worth a shot.
