I'm one of those people who, for all that I'm geeky vaguely hacker-like, I just want my computer to work. It doesn't have to be fancy, it doesn't have to run the newest graphics cards or the latest games. Basic tasks need to work, all the time, as expected, without user intervention ( Read more... )

Sounds like a case of a dirty/damaged cd.

Try cleaning the disk with some alcohol and a cotton cloth.
If that doesn't fix the problem, get a new cd.

Imagine if the standards for software and operating systems were applied to, say, brake systems?

the problem with that arguement is that the government (probably rightly so) considers brakes to be safety critical.

Software is more like the seats in your car - you expect them to work and look nice, and if they don't, you complain, but it's not generally dangerous if they're not perfect. :-)

Consumer software is like that.

Avionics, medical, nuclear and telecom is generally held to much, much higher standards. Software failing in one of those categories tends to mean very bad things happening.

it wouldn't take much to be held to a higher standard than windows :-)

Then again, this is why the nuke plants I worked at didn't run on software.
