Could you perhaps try nursing him on the left side and pumping on the right? My pump has an option to only use one side. You might even be able to do the two of them together.
Yep, he's probably expecting to get milk from Mama as fast as from a bottle, and, well, breasts don't work quite that way :-)
Your best bet is to disengage him as soon as it starts to hurt, then get him reattached (hopefully with a better latch). I still have to do that with Michael periodically (he occasionally likes to test my patience with his teeth), and we've been doing this for 10+ months. What he doesn't realize (and you can't explain) is that biting doesn't get more milk, it actually gets less (for one, your milk won't let down if it hurts).
You might consider starting him on the left, then moving to the right when he's not quite as, er, eager. You can always pump after, if you are still engorged.
Still, all in all, it sounds like you are making great progress!

That's today's plan. We'll see how it goes. The whole idea is to be able to stop pumping--it's such a time sink.
