Snow Days

We were given today off of work due to the bad weather.  Oddly, the, weather didn't seem that bad when I woke up, but I could see that plenty of snow had fallen and I guess the decision had been made earlier or there was simply too much cleanup left.  Of course, I prefer three-day weekends that I can actually plan for, but I'll take what I can get.

Of course, there was that ski trip I took a couple of weekends ago.  At least, it was intended to be a ski trip.  As it turned out, there was no introductory class included in our package, but there was one being offered at a nearby resort that barely fit into our schedule.  I felt like a kid, being raced to the class while my more experienced friends collected all the necessary equipment.  Alas, though I could keep myself moving to some extent, I never fully figured out how to stop (I never mastered the "wedge" and in fact the instructor didn't even make its purpose clear, IMO).  Even after the lesson, I wasn't particularly confident in my skiing ability, and additional practice later in the day didn't assuage my fears.  Therefore, I didn't do any "real" skiing during the weekend, but contented myself with some snow tubing and other diversions.  I never got to test my theory about skiing that "You ride to the top of the mountain, but then it's all downhill from there."  When the rest of the group wasn't skiing, we were all hanging out together, eating meals or playing games.  (In the latter case, our Wednesday-night game rule #2, "It's Marc's turn," proved surprisingly effective, though rule #1, "Don't let Jared win," wasn't enforced.)  Maybe attempting skiing for the first time over a three-day weekend wasn't optimal; it has been suggested that I try again during a daytrip and I might just do that.
