We are in a small city and have real police officers hanging out at the middle school and the high school. They can do something if needed. Younger kids are also held accountable. In school and out of school suspensions are usual. If it gets really bad the offending student may be removed from school and sent to a facility.

My son was bullied in middle school and what no one knew is that he had been taking Kung Fu for almost 6 years. We went- numerous times- to the principal and admin to the point of writing e-mails. It was always the same "Well- no one has caught X bullying anyone" and we were livid when we pointed out thats what bullies do- hide it from authority ( ... )

It *can* stop the bully problem, but not always. I've heard of a lot of kids being disciplined for striking back.

*raises hand* Me, almost.

It was ludicrous. Six year old girl vs BIG 14 year old boy.

I kicked the bleep out of his shins when he pulled me off of the jungle gym and started winding up.

He was going to be let off on emotional problems, and I was going to be expelled. Yay for a mother that is a force of nature, and a reporter grandmother whose dad once owned most of the county.

It's even worse when teachers and other "adults" become bullies, as well. And the fact that everyone, adults and children alike, despise victims of bullying because the victim must be "weak" to have become a victim compounds it immensely.

Okay, make it hurt where hurt counts: in the wallet. Make the parents of bullies pay for hospital or funeral bills which are the result of their children's attacks on others; make adults who bully children or other adults be similarly dinged. Weregild works, so let's put it to use.
