I consider Facebook far less worrisome than Google.

Google is going to make a lot of attachments and after cloud computing, have a database at its disposal that will be unrivaled almost in the history of the world.
I say almost, cause back when we were small, brute tribes, everyone knew almost everything about every body else in their "universe". In the near future, Google will know a great deal about many people on earth, extending even into their thoughts.
That is scary.
BUT, that is not actually the worry I was referring to, that is just the next step of a potential fascist state, and an inevitable one to boot. My own personal worry is not so near term worrisome (hopefully), because only a few touched on it and no one mentioned it. Perhaps this fear is very difficult to understand in 21st century america, because it just has been out of sight for so long.
I'll talk about it next time.
Thanks for responding. Hope the poker is going great!

I'd call it only a bit worrisome. Compared to credit card records, cameras in public and semi-public places (incl. traffic cameras), other sites that have more of your life (google, linkedin, flickr, this very livejournal, etc.) on them, facebook isn't even a step down the slippery slope, you're well past it already.

For personal sanity, I pretty much never refuse a friend request, but I do categorize and hide people fairly aggressively. I just don't spend enough time reading updates to keep up with every photo and comment posted by even fairly close friends.

This also gives me a little (perhaps very little) bit of deniability. "sure, I friended him, but I friend EVERYONE - it doesn't mean I'm part of his sekrit resistance cabal".

And, of course, your cell phone is constantly tipping off where you go.

hiya, how have you been?
I spend with my credit card, "they" probably now know where I am. I use my cell phone, same thing. In a few years, in cities, facial recog with prolific cameras will make me locatable easy.
That is not the worry I refer to, that was inevitable. Tech rolls ever on.

I am slowly understanding the privacy options of facebook, but I sure like "hide". I wouldn't block anyone's speech here, I want free speech and ideas, but there, some people have no manners, and all I have to do is click that button....thanks.

Getting close to my real worry with your last paragraph. I'll write my next post about it.

Google already has facial recognition/search built into Picasso. I agree, though that photo tagging is one of the aspects I like least about FB.

We gotta face it. "They" are pretty much going to know (or quickly, be able to know) where you are at every moment, most especially if you live in urban areas.
Makes me think of the Unabomber (without the absurd terrorism) for some reason.

I'm going to write about my own personal worry next time.
Thanks for responding, hope you and poker are well.

You could send important converse by mail or better yet, in person.
Reading your post relivens that old paranoia, sometimes misnamed, the fear I am referring to.

As always, thanks for responding.

I like my sister's criteria, "would I get together with the person for a cup of coffee if they were in town." If the answer is no, they don't get added. I've been more open than that, but I've declined my share. I will say it is creating very weird cross section of my past friendships and relationships. I am pretty guarded about what I put on there, I put much more personal stuff here on LJ in friends-locked posts. Then again, I've never met probably 2/3rds of my LJ friends list in person, so maybe that's not the best idea either.

I like your sister's criteria, and am going to use a slightly more restrictive method. Have I ever had a meal with you, or are you family? If those answers are yes, you have a good shot at seeing facebook. If no, you have much lower chance.

It is easier to talk to near strangers than close friends sometimes, and sometimes those strangers are more useful. Just one channel.

Thanks for responding, hope you are well.
