Back when Star Trek: Voyager started, the big concept was to get back to exploration, i.e. the crew would spend all their time meeting new species rather than acting as a taxi service for Deanna's mother. That's fine, but it had a few drawbacks ( Read more... )

While they are trying to get home, neither they or the audience have any idea how to go about it, much less whether it's possible in their life-times, in contrast to Voyager.

I wouldn't say that - they have a few options:

a) Use the stargate that's built into the ship. (Requires a suitable power source, which they may come across in their travels.)

b) Turn the ship around and use the map to retrace their steps, assuming that they can turn off the auto-pilot. This would take a ridiculously long time unless (again) they find a suitable power source. As I recall, travel between the Milky Way and Pegasus galaxies takes about 3 weeks in normal hyperdrive or about 3 days with a ZPM.

c) Find/build something like the Ori supergate (used to send ships between galaxies).

Also, if the people on Earth figure out where everyone went (which shouldn't take too long), they can work on reestablishing contact, i.e. recreate the Icarus project. It would only be a 1-way wormhole, but the SGC could then potentially help out by sending through new supplies, e.g. ZPMs.

Obviously these aren't detailed plans, and the "Destiny" has some more pressing problems at the moment (such as life-support), but it's a place to start.
