Myanthea (and the rest of the weekend)

Mar 27, 2012 09:57

This weekend was the Myanthea one-day. As usual, that meant that sarrciano and I drove to my parents' house (20 minutes from the site) to crash there Friday night. My dad was there, and we chatted a bit and watched an episode of Macguyver, which was really fun.

Saturday we slept in a bit, then headed to ( Myanthea )

I've noticed that every report I've heard or read of Myanthea includes a lot of running for your lives. But no one seems bothered by that fact. It sounds like an interesting place.

It is certainly an interesting place. I came into what is being called "Old Myanthea" towards the end of the original campaign.

Myanthea had something like 30-40 players, if that. These were the players that could handle and enjoyed losing 3 out of 5 field fights per weekend. Those 3 fights ended with you saying things like, "yeah 14 of us rezzed but we got (x npc) to the gate." It was a place where it would not be uncommon to find several people scattered through out the field in individual circles counting their 9ths to figure out if they could make it through reset.

Those two field fights that you managed to win you appreciated that much more.

This staff has done an excellent job of capturing that same "Oh gawd, Oh Gawd we're all going to die, but we got the Phoenix Embers away!" feel.

Well, kudos to staff. Achieving that feeling and making the pcs feel cool and not statted into the ground is difficult. But if done right those can be the most epic moments. It's awesome that they have managed that, especially given they have a previous campaign to live up to

It also helps that the vast majority of the playerbase either were old Myanthea players... or have been hearing horror stories about old Myanthea for years now (and doing preparatory mods which often were extremely rough). So it's not coming as a huge shock that we spend a lot of our time running and hiding in circles, which helps with the 'no one is bothered by it'.

Proper expectations help. At the first event the leaders of town made several public announcements that if someone did something stupid and got killed, they were being left behind. If they did something stupid and someone died trying to rescue them, they'd be charged with murder. If someone lost 'stuff' trying to rescue them, they'd be charged with theft. And so on. Really set the tone for the day.
