Caterers and the Economy

In October I contacted several caterers for our Not-A-Wedding. We don't have a huge budget but we're not working with a tiny budget either, so I was concerned when most wouldn't even talk to me unless we were working with at least $15,000. I was given several "price indications" from $18,000-22,000 - no firm proposals were given and frankly, many ( Read more... )

Hey there,

I too am doing a fair bit of planning and organizing as my virgo, spreadsheet wielding sweetheart is off working all over the country. The wedding industry is in many ways just that, an industry. We too were originally faced with the choice of a price in our budget (without booze) or more than we could afford. Their prices have come down, and our budget has gone up, and between the two I think we can afford a kick-ass party. I discovered the depth of Bear's wedding obsession recently - he brought home a Martha Stewart Wedding Magazine. Now, I love him, and I am totally excited about our wedding, but Martha Stewart is beyond me. I, i am excited by mundane tasks like folding a tiny paper crane to be sent with each one of our invitations and deeply romantic tasks like commissioning our rings. I would very much like to be at your wedding, and am hoping you can make it to ours, and in the meanwhile, I am enjoying having company on this journey.

Jet, check to see it there is a culinary school in your ara. Often, they jump at the the chance to do weddings, at much lower prices and the whole thing is overseen by the instructor, so the food is turned out well.

i heard some economist saying the good thing (and necessary thing) about recessions is they price-correct. sounds like catering in your area needed a little correction.

Hey the greed that drove this consumer market is fizzled. The "I paid this much" to show off took a toll on us and now it's correcting until the next time we have to learn the lesson.

glad it has happen, hate the price most of us are paying for this greed and the reality that is hitting home. But am not unhappy to see real prices.
