And an atheist didn't lead the salt march, or spearhead the Civil Rights Movement, or....

I just find picking out instances of horrible behaviour that represent fring beliefs held by a microscopic fraction of the larger group is unhelpful, is all.

Fair enough to the first point, but given the times, it would have been impossible to have been taken seriously or not considered an agent of the devil.

Those instances of horror illuminate a much deeper issue, do they not?

You make it sound like they were pretending faith to get their agendas passed, instead of working toward their agendas because they were motivated by personal faith.

If I listed a bunch of grotesque acts of violence performed by men, what would that illuminate?

And yes, I do think there are huge issues here. Issues, plural. And when you paint them with a huge ATHEISTS NEVER DO THIS SHIT brush, you get ... well, comment threads like the one above this one.

So you're saying without the belief in God they would feel no reason to do these things for basic compassion for their fellow man or simple human decency. They only do it to win brownie points int he name of God? An that's better... how again?

Feel free to list all of the similar atrocities committed in the name of atheism - I'd be *quite* happy to hear them. Not even kidding. 100% dead serious. I'll even take a list that's 1/10 as long.

Yep, insanity exists in people of faith...and in people who are atheists.

Insanity knows no bounds, and religion doesn't prevent insanity, though I don't think lack of religion necessarily precludes insanity.

I live in a post-communist country myself. Bulgaria used to be the most obedient satellite of the Soviet Union. What happenned there happenned here too, on a smaller scale, concentration camps and all.

And that's why we still have the phenomenon of perfectly secular homophobia, among other things.
