Magic reveal

Feb 18, 2012 10:49

Anyone want to talk about how the magic reveal should go down?  skuares was saying that she thought it would be interesting if Merlin did magic and Arthur saw it, but Merlin didn't know.

Part of me thinks it should be some simple thing that gets Merlin caught and part of me thinks that it should be a life or death thing where Merlin reveals his magic.

I think Merlin will plan it out and then his plan goes down the drain anyway! :) Before he gets around to telling Arthur, it will come to a point where he has to reveal his magic. A situation will arise where he has no choice.

My BB fic is a reveal fic where that's what happens - Merlin has no choice. If he doesn't use his magic Arthur will die, and there's no hiding the magic.

Ooh, yet another option I had not considered.

I feel like it has to come down to a point where he's forced to tell for some reason.

The BB fic you are working on right now? Oooh. I've got to start reading longer fics.

And Arthur will see why Merlin has to use it, what he's using it for - because it will be a situation where he saves either Arthur's life or someone else's. Which will force Arthur to re-evaluate the nature of magic and see that it isn't always evil, that it can be used for good.

Yes, the BB fic I'm working on. (There's a reveal in my BB fic from last year as well though! I love reveal fic :) )

And you should definitely start reading longer fics - there's so much good stuff out there waiting for you! <3

Someone yesterday suggested that Merlin would need to save Gwen's life. I'm not sure I'd buy in the BBC 'verse.

I'm starting to become more interested in reveal fic. I've been afraid to touch it.

Oooh, last year's was a reveal!fic too? I might have to read it. I get so distracted reading stuff on the computer.

Yeah, I know there is a lot of really good stuff out there. I wish more of the long stuff was recorded as I love listening to stories and have a lot more time to listen to stuff than I do to read.

After all the waiting I WANT A BIG BANG! I want Merlin in a situation in which he has no choice but to reveal his magic. Preferably a life or death situation. Would be even cooler if the dragon is involved somehow. But I think that's to much to ask for.

When Merlin saves Arthur from dying the king can't be too angry. Oh, and my h/c heart would cry tears of joy if Merlin reveals it by saving Arthur and then almost dies himself because of it.

But honestly I'm fed up, I don't want to wait anymore. Season 4 already annoyed me so I really hope they go through with the 5 season story arc and finally reveal it.

I definitely want the reveal at the beginning of S5.

Seems to me like it has to be life or death. Do you think that Merlin would do magic to save Gwen's life? What about Gaius?

OOooooh. I would LOVE it if the dragon were involved too, but you know that already:D ♥

I thought the whole time he would reveal his magic if one of the main cast would be in a life/death situation but he didn't do magic a couple of times when I expected him to do to solve a critical situation much more easily and of course also in secret. But the writer's decided against it. So now I'm not sure anymore. IMO he would save e.g. Gwen. And also Gaius. But when Gwen left he didn't even say goodbye properly. I expected him to say something along the lines "You can stay at my mother's" but he didn't even talk to her when she left, just nodded. After this cooly goodbye I don't know what the writers will do. Right now I've some trouble to differiate between my headcanon and the real series. In the real series they're less friendly with each other.

In my head, and a lot of other people's, he had a conversation with Gwen in private.

I think he couldn't be seen publicly supporting her and that's why he stood there and watched her leave, but he did send her to Ealdor.

I really need to rewatch 4.13 and see what I think of their interaction. I wasn't paying attention to that relationship before. Before 4.09, they were definitely warm and friendly with each other. Heck, they were pretty good in 4.08, right? Although Merlin was a little wary of Gwen figuring out he was gay had magic. But at the end he does say it was better to be saved by a woman than to be dead. Props to him.

I've written a number of reveal fics. My favorites are when Merlin has to do magic to save someone (usually Arthur) but that Arthur reacts badly to the magic and the fact that Merlin has been lying to him for years. So that Merlin either dies or is exiled or runs away. Very few happy endings in my mind.

I honestly don't know how they would handle it on the show. Up to this year, I thought they would do it very well (esp. Julian Jones who writes well and seems to get Merlin and Arthur's banter just right) but after Lancelot du Lac episode and the episode where Arthur pulls the sword out of the stone, I'm not so sure.

Ack! You don't think they would never do the magic reveal, do you? I need the reveal and I need a happy ending. This show is all about the happy endings for me, except for what they did to Lancelot and Gwen.

Are you talking about 4.12 and 4.13 together? I can't remember which one was the one where he actually pulls the sword out. I did not like the ending of 4.13.

I guess it's time for me to start writing my own happy ending reveal fics.

I'm not sure they will ever do the magic reveal. If they were going to do it, they would have done it in series 4 since they were leading up to it very clearly for the first 1/2 of the series.

I think it was 4.13 (which Julian Jones wrote and I was quite unhappy about it since I expected more from him). The whole thing felt off-balance - with the sword-pulling and Merlin using mind-control on Arthur and the quick wedding. Not a fan of that episode.

You should write your own happy ending reveal fics if that's what you want to happen. I love angst so I'd want lots of it before things got better.

Clearly there needs to be lots of angst before the reconciliation, but I do love a happy ending, even if it's not always realistic:D

I agree with the life/death situation. Would love Merlin to save Arthur's life but then it back fires and he's left fighting for his life (that way Arthur could work through any anger he has for being lied to, and at the end of the day Merlin's dying so he can't stay angry at him).

I really hope it's revealed this season.

Wow, you people really have it in for Merlin, don't you?:D You think Merlin needs to be on the brink of death to survive Arthur's wrath? I'm really going to have to write some reveal fic.

It'd better be man.

How's the temptation series going? Need any help?:D

LOL. We do all seem to think that, don't we? The main reason I'd like to see that is so we could see how much Merlin means to Arthur (again! And see how he gets over his anger). LOL.

Ooh can't wait to see what you write for a reveal fic :).

I'm trying to finish the next part of the series now. It's going ... annoyingly (is that even a word?). I don't like anything I write at the moment for it. But hoping it'll come together soon.

I don't think that! I don't want Merlin to have to almost die for Arthur to accept his magic.

Eeeek, the pressure;)

You can do it! \o/ Let me know if you need cheerleading. I feel like everything I write is crap and the stuff I wrote at the beginning is even worse, so I know the feeling:D

Like archaeologist_d I am doubting if there ever will be a reveal. They have missed SO MANY good opportunities, espcially in season 4 ( ... )

1. I really hope they end at S5, as much as I adore the show, which is A LOT.

I would love to see the reveal at the beginning of the next season and then lots of angst over several eps and possibly even Merlin being banished as Arthur deals with it.

I agree. The reconciliation with Gwen was too easy.
