They are so many hang-ups on the definition of Christianity and what it includes.. that those answers don't really surprise me, as sad as that is.

I would have chosen Judaism too. We rock!

Man, I thought it was just MY high schoolers. Every year when I teach "The Crucible," I end up doing a crash course in religious history. A very abbreviated course, a very generalized course, I've got it down to under five minutes.

Please don't hate me, oh you two religious study peeps, I almost always end up summarizing with, "Look, if they believe Jesus was the savior, then they're Christian and we'll leave it at that."

Tell Brian I understand. I really, really do.

Honestly, Buddhism was my guess, though more as a way of life rather than in a religious sense. ;) Judaism was next, though!

I was taught growing up that Catholicism and Christianity were two completely different faiths (which didn't even make sense at the time, as they both believe the same basic tenants... WTF?), and eventually, that Protestantism was different from Catholicism and Christianity. I think that, once Christianity as a whole is broken up like that, each sect becomes less and less of the "#1 religion."

I guess it depends on what you were taught. Now it's more like, "Those who believe in Jesus over here, those who are waiting for the Messiah over here, and the rest of you... well, you're Pagans anyway, so just roam as you will, please." ;)

Yeah it depends on what you are taught, and I wouldn't be as annoyed if we hadn't emphasized over and over, that in this class our standard is self-designation. If Catholics think of themselves as Christians then we count them as such demographically, and OH LOOK THEY DO, and that is how the stats worked every time we discussed the world situation, or the US situation, or regional variation within the US, grr ( ... )

I got your message, and will call you back soon. Maybe in ... 3 weeks? Hahahaha. Seriously, I miss you and will be talking to you soon.

Jedi are in fact #2 in New Zealand, and are in the small but non-trival sized lists in Australia, Canada, and Britain. The US hasn't had a major Jedi movement yet (they tend to happen immediately before censuses), but just wait until 2010! I'm confident it will be up there with the Buddhists and UUs, unless it is really successful and passes Jews.

Definite *headesk* moment! AS my DH pointed out, it would be one thing if they were ignorant -- but they're in a freakin' religions class!

I have grown so tired of the "Catholics aren't Christians" mentality that I don't even have the energy to be offended by it anymore.
