Re: NALT - Sparky's view of the NALT project makes complete sense from his perspective. Suffering from bigotry leads to righteous anger leads to this frame. From the inside of the church, though, the NALT project looks like an attempt to put something out there that says to church people: you don't have to be anti-GLBT to be Christian. You yourself, Jay, have wondered why Christians allow the Christianists to capture the brand in the media. It's odd to be griped at when we try to present a different view.
I'd also add: yeah, change from inside. Where else does Sparky think it's going to come from? Violence from outside? Some of the folks in my denomination are wounded by our church's stance, some have lost church members, lost jobs, lost ordination because of their advocacy for GLBT folk. But also, a few bishops and respected church ethicists are presiding at marriage for gay and lesbian couples. Slowly, too slowly, change is happening.
Alas, the bacon article is sadly misleading. The scientists didn't test bacon, they tested niacin, which bacon contains. That leaves out all the other crapola in bacon, like nitrites, which aren't so benign. The heading should really read "Study Shows Niacin Makes Roundworms Live Longer". Caveat lector.
