It's not really about scent, that's just a convenient conceit I picked up to theme each chapter, basically - chapter 1 is scent, 2 is hearing, 3 is taste, 4 is sight and 5 is touch. (Or something like that.) Each theme is woven in a little bit, but not really particularly heavily - the story is actually about Logan giving Marie what she wants, really. *cough* PORN *cough*
