Yeah it really helps because it's apparently really sore. He won't allow anyone to hug him, even gently :/

Yeah I was watching a Dreamworks behind the scenes thing for the new Shrek movie that also had some HTTYD stuff in it and I just thought "wait a minute! big, red, she's a Monstrous Nightmare!" :P
