If you don't already use Windows Messenger, I'd use that instead - same login and all that, but not tied to your browser window.

And that would be it... yeah I used my windows messenger, I might just turn off my lj messenger, I'm constantly flitting around the internet and computer.

It's a pain in the butt. It's tied to windows live, but is web-based, in fact it's just tied to LJ, so browsing away from LJ would sign you out. Lame.
