That really does sound like an awful lot of work simply to be able to watch someone else do all the work. Is it a requirement for the Pre-Med programme, or is it just an optional thing you want to try?

And the way that I got so many f-listers is that I joined communities for things I was interested in and participated in discussions and reviewed things people did. Over time, people started to note who I was and requested me as a friend. And luckily, I've got the kind of friends who comment. :) Being a writer and contributing to fandom also helps because people friended me to keep up with my writing and then got intrigued by my personal life too.

Congrats on starting to save for the iMac. I know you're excited. :)
