NOTHING WRONG

“It’s a coincidence,” he tells her.

Karin offers a weak smile. “I know.”

“No.” His voice is bleak, and he avoids looking at her. She is a smear of matted red hair, blotchy bloodied skin and frightened eyes. He cannot stand that fear. “No. Your survival is a coincidence. I didn’t care-.”

“Stop.”

He takes a deep breath.

“I’m gone. Something inside me is-.” He shuts his eyes, one of them still dank and heavy with blood. “I’m not there anymore. Don’t expect any kindness from me. If I have to choose, I’ll choose this all over again.”

He listens to the silence punctuated throughout with Karin’s spasmic breathing. He can guess what she is thinking about. She remembers him back at Orochimaru’s hideout. He has changed too much since then, so much that it has begun to show. He changed four times in his life: from child to man when his brother slaughtered his clan; from friend to enemy when he defected from Konoha; from snake to hawk when he executed his revenge on Itachi; from avenger to murderer when he realized he had no pity left for anyone.

“I felt it…” Karin whispers. “Cold… burning… Right over my heart.”

She is the right height; in the end, this is what saved her. If she were a little bit taller, he would have hit her heart as well as Danzou’s. And he would not have been sorry.

“What will you do?” Karin asks. “After.”

He forces himself to turn and face her. She used to be so clingy, almost like Sakura, but she lies there solemn and serious and honestly expects him to answer - and he doesn’t know what to say. He wants to ask her if she really believes there will be any aftermath. He wants to hold her hand and tell her she will survive and he will die; or he wants her to hold his hand and tell him he is doing the right thing. In the end, he keeps silent.

Words will change nothing.

“Do you still have a crush on me?” he hears himself asking. He expects a firm ‘no’. You can’t possibly like someone who has put a bolt of Chidori through you in order to get someone else.

But she has already fallen asleep.
