BEAUTIFUL UGLY

Emotions can be ugly. Spock has seen it. Felt it, too, those few times he had been successfully provoked into revealing his turbulent human side. There is arrogance. There is burning wrath and profound grief and fear. He is not above that, but he knows how to control it; at times like these he is glad to be a Vulcan.

Emotions can be beautiful, too. Sometimes they are hard to tell apart. There is a certain type of people that are so difficult to deal with that they make a mess out of your emotions in a heartbeat. For better or worse, Spock serves under one such person.

Back where his older self came from, things had been different. There had been some mellow warmth between them standing on the solid foundation of mutual respect and years of companionship. He had been calmer, more mature; Kirk had been more level-headed and responsible.

The Jim Spock knows is foolhardy, cocky, impulsive, and absolutely brilliant. He is talented but lazy, charming but disrespectful, a hero by a fluke and a friend without a question, even though Spock still fails to find a logical explanation as to how it came to pass. But he feels it - sharply, painfully, deeply - feels that their destinies lie together.

They squabble all the time. Spock never raises his voice while Jim blurts out his genial nonsense, argues for the sake of an argument until his throat get sore. Spock recites the provisions of the Starfleet Regulations impassively; Jim counters with his ‘gut feeling’. Spock says right; Jim demands left. Spock refuses to play the Captain’s game of emotions; Jim drags him into it without asking.

They annoy the hell out of each other. And yet, Spock reasons coolly, if he had to die for someone, if there is any person in the world worth dying for, it must be this brat. Because with him the ugliest of emotions are beautiful.
