A great percentage of my current students are Asian -- Korean, Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese, and Vietnamese. Since discussion of cultural difference is the primary content in ESL classes, I have managed to learn bits here and there about the various Asian cultures and nations of my students and my curiosity has grown ( Read more... )

Definitely: Love that movie also. But I think Tropical Malady so clearly illustrates what the teachers want to see: the frames they listed for us ... including political and symbolic. *sigh* Reality apparently only comes in four frames ... .

Argghh! I always get ear-burn after the fact!

You must inform me of implied interlocutors and content of whisperings! ;)

I brought you up over lunch with Nayland B, only to start shouting your praises. Effusively!

And I saw and liked Yi Yi.

*grin* Awww: You're a dear-heart! And I cherish every last one of your exaggerations to my benefit! :)

(The plan is for me to purchase a ticket tonight!)

Maybe we can discuss Yi yi, among thousands of other things, later this summer!

aw, i'm sure Nora's fine. her being in an art flick isn't as dodgy a proposal as Scarlett Johannson recording and indie album, and that didn't even turn out to be a total waste.

*gulp* OK: I have to say you just upped the ante on my artistic-project-crossover fear meter! After I recover, I'm likely to take your word for it! ;)

i loved yi yi. it's a sweet sweet film (and not in a syrupy way). haven't seen the other two...will have to wait till i have netflix again in the states.

i was pretty disappointed with the last wong kar-wai film. as a normal film, it wasn't horrible, and i'd probably watch it if i had nothing else to do and it was there, but as one of his films i expect(ed) much, much more.

actually, though there are lots of flaws, i really liked ang lee's lust, caution. and if you're into some asian films right now, have you seen much yasuhiro ozu?

You know? Sweet but not syrupy is one of my favorite genres. If you add bittersweet nostalgia to it, I'm totally cuddled on the couch with it!

Are you talking about Wong Kar-Wai's 2046? If so, I absolutely loved it!

I haven't seen any Ozu. I have a friend in Little Rock who heartily recommended him to me before, but I haven't as of yet picked any up. Would you recommend a particular title?

i loved 2046 too. i was talking about My Blueberry Nights.

MBN! Sorry: I have just assumed, for whatever reasons, that no one is seeing it. :)

Thanks for the recos! I'll put these in queue post haste!
