1. This has been festering (sic) at the back of my mind for some time - but reading Langford's comments on Latin dictionaries caused an eruption.
2. Draco's wand: I usually stick to the books/JKR for background (hence hawthorn), and ignore the films (it should be obvious by now that Tom Felton is not my Draco) but… well… fourteen inches!
3. Dedicated to my own 4th form biology teacher, who was woefully ignorant of the properties of the Venus Fly Trap (Dionaea muscipula *).

I doubt it has any interesting properties. Surely the name arises from the fact that the two lobes of the trap look just like a large vulva... (especially if they turn red)

Said teacher was the sort who read through the text book a week ahead of her students and in this case had got as far as the fact that VFTs are carnivorous, but not found out exactly how they trapped their prey - and clearly didn't believe me when I told her.
