I believe it is Arthurian. Might be Charlemagne. I would guess late 16th cen to early 17th? Baroque period maybe?

I've seen it several times but can't remember the artist.

It looks like it ought to be a book cover illustration. :) I have no clue though, I'm completely art-illiterate, sadly.

I recognized the style but couldn't place the name. I managed to find it with some searching. I'm far more familiar with his La Belle Dame Sans Merci :)

In fact, I think that someone (holleyberry and thegeneral?) we know may have a print of LBDSM hanging in their living room.
